Does anyone happen to know which replacement paper filters flow best. I looked at a K & N under a microscope and I can see why dirt gets by. There are large gaps, the k & n doesn't come in contact with enough of the air to nab all of the dirt particles. What's your favorite paper filter?
I think it helps a bunch I actually read the article well!
Walmart doesn't carry the factory Motorcraft air filters, although I'm fairly certain they do carry $1.99 air filters, I wouldn't want to run it in my trucks.

That is why it uses oil. A dry k&N will let lots of dirt by.
On our 96 i found the following:
Fram doesn't fit the box well (gaskets are too large); the "lid" doesn't seal tight).
Wix fits well.
Motorcraft fits well.

Its more like 9.95 every year or 2. That kit will clean an average size filter about 3-4 times. I have a K&N filter in everything I own, and I can honestly say that every vehicle gets 1-2 more mpg. They may be pricey, but I still say they are the best.
As a building conttractor I drive mountain dirts roads almost everyday, and around our place to boot. I pull everything from our horses, to heavy equipment and I also get 1-2 mpg more using them. The first time I drove a vehicle with a K&N type filter was a Ferrair 312P Formula One race car. The foam and oil filters have been around a long time and do work quite well.
I like to clean my filters frequently due to the dusty environment that I drive in. I found that good old 10wt oil works very well and is far cheaper than buying the kit. I use kerosene to clean the filters instead of their kit stuff. Of course you must let the filter dry well before reinstalling it in your vehicle.
Fram is also a fine filter to use, they started out in the racing world first and have proven there worth.
