I drive a 2004 F150 and the window regulator just failed on me. $400 fix at the dealership where he told me this is a major problem with the 04-05 models. Come home to research and i'm astonished to find the amount of stories about this. People driving 70 mph and their windows just drop.
I stuck with Ford even though their 04-05 models have major transmission problems, through their recent airbag recall, and even through the spark plug debacle. As a shareholder, i'm saddened that they dont even acknowledge this problem.
Can anyone point me to the best solution? Local shop or a cheap place to purchase it? Thanks.
I had the one on my driver's door fail 4 years ago and the extended warranty covered it. I had another fail last week on the passenger door and it cost me $413.00. The frustrating thing is I am looking to get a new truck very soon. Why couldn't the old one wait just a little while longer to fail.
I recently had the passenger front fail and used the Amazon replacement. It was easy to do and there is a write up with pics somewhere on here if you need some pointers for a DIYer.
I also have an 04 that i recently bought thinking was a better upgrade from my 01 Screw. Apparently Not!!! I had to already have the cam phasers replaced, there's a hum a 50 mph (ring and pinion), the drivers mirror was wood screwed together come to find out when the dealership tried to fold in the mirrors and this weekend after taking a trip to the lake my window regulator failed on my drivers side, What a lemon. As for the regulator if you have slight mechanical skills you can tackle this job yourself and save lots of cash. The part from carquest was $129.00 and took about an hour give or take.
1. Remove door panel, two screws on bottom of panel , remove access cover inside door handle area there are two bolts to remove, remove the speaker cover and four screws holding in speaker and unplug and remove, lift up and towards you on the window/lock switch panel and unplug the door locks, mirrors, window switches if you have power., and there's one more bolt on the left side under the switch panel remove it. Now lift up and out on the door panel and remove. You will also have to slide the door handle cable out of the handle itself.
2. Remove the plastic door cover
3. Look through the access holes in the door itelf and you will see two 10mm bolts that tighten the window sashes to the glass and hold it to the regulator. You must loosen these and this may require lowering and raising the glass by hand to the right access hole.
4. One the window sashes are loose take duct tape and tape the glass in the up position to the door frame .
5. Loosen the four 10mm bolts holding the window regulator in place , unplug the window motor in the center of the door, and remove the window motor 10mm retaining bolt in the center of the door.
6. You will have to then work the regulator mechanism out of the door hole.
7. Get the new regulator and plug the window switches in with the door off and plug the window motor in and ensure that the regulator goes in the appropriate direction with up/down. If its opposite you may have to rewire the new window motor.
8. Reinstall the regulator and four bolts and the center window motor bolt.Plug in window motor.
9.Remove duct tape from glass and lower down into window sashes. You may have to now use the window switch to raise the glass to tighten the window sash bolts and only snug them or you may break the glass.
10. Reinstall door panel and all bolts . Ensure when installing panel to get door lock into the panel hole and reinstall door handle cable.
11. Reinstall window/lock/mirror switch panel and speaker and clean window and try to enjoy your truck!!!!
Hopefully this helps others I was a Ford Tech for 5 years and a true Ford Guy. Good Luck.
been there done that, twice. i got my regulator at advance auto parts for $100 and it super simple, just make sure they give you the right regulator, i had to go back and forth (an idiot at the counter). there are two different sizes for the front doors, the crew cab regulator is smaller than the ext. cab and reg cab. regulator.
I've done the driver's side..I got lucky it died in the fully up position. The removal & installation takes approx an hour and parts were $85 - 90 on line.
