I have a 1976 ranger, its in great shape with the exception of a tired 302.
I also have a 1977 LTD with a 351w in it that purrs like new, the body how ever is slowly falling apart.
My question is: What would the cost be and additional materials need to put the 351w in the truck?
By cost i mean : motor mounts? and such, i think i can do the install.
You can do the switch for next to nothing since you have a complete running donor car. You can reuse the existing 302 motor mounts and wiring harness. One thing to check is that the oilpan on the 351 is the same configuration as the one on the 302 (ie front sump for 2wd truck, rear sump for 4wd truck). You can probably use the accesory drive mounts that are on the 351 if the accessories are in the same place as what's on your 302, otherwise you might be able to combine the two. Your most likely expense will be getting custom work done on the exhaust as the 351 has a wider & taller block than the 302. Any more questions just ask, several of us have already done the swap successfully. Good luck.
1) the transmission on 351w is perfect, is there any difference between this and what would come standard in the truck?
2)would i need to use the radiator that comes with the 351w?
I'm not sure if its bigger than the one in truck or not.
3) would the driveline need any modifications?
My thought is to pull the motor/tranny as one unit out of each vehicle. Is this possible?
The 351w does not leak a single drop of oil (amazing considering all the fords i've owned) what gaskets would it be smart to replace, while enigine is out of vehicle? valve cover gaskets for sure.... others?
Thankyou very much, I can build a house or garage with little or no questions, but cars are another story
If the radiator in the car is a 3 or 4 core then you use it, your 302 should be a 2 core and it will cool a 351W just fine. The engines are both windsors so they will use the same motor mounts and tranny bellhousing. The exhaust is the only thing you need to figure out. Good Luck.
