Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what my problem is with my AC. Its a 99 F150 5.4 with 923000 miles. Ideling it blows 80 degree air out vents on MAX AC, but driving down Interstate its blowing 38 degree air. It has been 90+ with heat indexes of 110 to115. Any help would be appreciated and Thanks In advance for any input.
Have you had the charge level checked?
The reason it gets hot at slow speeds and idle is the condenser does not have enough air flowing to condense the fluid back to a liquid and cool down before returning back to the compressor for lack of enough system charge.
Also the fan clutch 'could' be faulty.
Get things checked out!
At the truck's age, you need some service.
Yep sounds like low refigerant. I would take Bluegrass7's advice, have it serviced.
Mine was doing simular thing however it would just blow cool air at higher rpm. I had a leak at compressor. I bought a o ring kit and replaced it myself but took it to shop for proper evac and recharge. Works like a charm now, in fact on Max with outside temp at 105 yesterday it was frickin cold in my truck!
Thanks guys, i just wanted to see if anyone else has had a similar problem before. Most shops just want to change everything to get the extra money, however there is still some trust worthy mechanics out there. Again thanks I will try to get it check this week and let you know. I replaced fan clutch about five months ago so I dont think it would be bad yet. This truck is one of the best I've had since my old 1976 F250. This site has help me numerous times and again thank s to everyone thats replies.

Reason: forgot to mention fan clutch replacement
Stopped today and made an appointment for tomorrow to have AC check. The man said he was going to recover freon and evac it to see if it has a leak somewhere. If all that shows good he would recharge, but he was saying same as you guys. More than likely it is low, cost for this is 69.95. That covers checking system and 1 lb of freon if needed. Ill try to post the damage tommorrow, thanks again.
Had AC checked, it had 3.33 lbs in it. They recovered all of it and put 2.20lbs back in it and it dropped air to 60 degrees at vent and same when driving. The low pressure was about 78 and high was about 170 at idel. Pressure would be closer to being right when RPM increased. They told me the compressor was going bad or something was clogged on low side since pressure was to high on low and to low on high. Does that sound right? I stopped at Advance and bought a new compessor, dryer and orfice tube with filter. Everything is new not rebuilt with 2 year warranty, for less than $300.00. Do you all think I should change everything or could it be something else, I'm thinking I'll be better off changing everything with new stuff. Also was wandering about best way to flush lines, would the flush you can buy at auto store work good and blow out with air compressor. And would it be ok to reuse freon that is recovered or put new in? Thanks again for the replies.
Mine evindently it was my compreesor, had it changed along with dryer and orfice tube filter and put new freeon in it. It is blowing 50 degree air now when ideling and still around 40 when driving on AC. Hope this helps. I got everything and had it installed for less than 400 bucks with 2 yr. warranty.
