Okay so today when I was pulling the skid steer along with some other equipment I noticed a high pitched squeaking noise coming from the engine. I had heard it do it once or twice before, but it was more frequent with the trailer back there. Any suggestions as to what it is? The truck only has 42,000 miles on it so I hope nothing is worn out yet. The belt seems good and tight, no cracks. It normally only does it on hills where the RPMs are much higher. Its normally short squeak, then it will quit for a moment and start again. Any suggestions as to what could be causing it? Could it be idler pulley, alternator? I'm at a loss.
Thanks,
Kevin
A 2003 with 42000 ? You lucky dog. Check the serpentine belt where it comes around
a pulley and you can see the bottom side. If you see cracks, replace it

Thanks! I only had 29,000 when I bought it about a year ago. It took quite a while and a chunk on money to find it though. I'm going to loosen the belt later today and check all the pulleys. The weird thing is it only does it about once a month or so, which I find odd. I need to look closer, but if it is a motorcraft belt I would guess it is the one from the factory, in which cause I would probably just replace it to see what happened.
Is it a squeaking or a squealing as u start to pull hills? The skid steer weight will cause the turbo to work harder. If u have a loose boot at the turbo or intercooler, it will make a noise similar to stretching easter grass between your fingers and blowing it.
You live pretty close so I will be glad to help if u need any.

Never thought of that one...I will check those and see. That makes sense as it normally does it at higher RPM's/higher load situations.
Okay got to messing around with it and I'm pretty sure its belt related. I loosened it up and everything seemed good and tight to me. The belt was not cracked, but was worn more on one side than the other. I don't think it is the tensioner because the squeak only happens every once in a while. Here are some pictures. Maybe I just need a new belt?
