Squeaking Noise from engine Compartment

My truck has developed an intermitant sqeaking noise from the engine compartment.

I replaced the serpentine belt about 2 years ago and the belt looks good.

I found in another post that it could be "the Idler pulley or maybe the Belt tensioner pulley". If this is the case how would I go about checking if the bearings are wearing out in those pulleys?

Also is there something on the belt tensionser like a spring or something that could cause the belt to lossen up?

Use a ratchet to take the tension off the belt, and turn the idler pulley, and the tensioner pulley. See if they have any play aswell. If they are smooth, try the other pulleys, (alternator, water pump, etc)

Don't forget about the AC compressor clutch, mine just went out yesterday. Good thing is you can just unplug it till you fix it. Or never use defrost.

Where is the AC compressor clutch and what does it look like? How would I go about checking to make sure that it is opperating properly?

It is on the left side of the pulley system.

As far as being dead in the water, I'm still driving my truck after having it seize with smoke and everything. I just unpluged it, the pulley just free spins.

Thanks for clearing that up...crap now I need a new compressor. Yeah I had the same thing happen on my 95 Suburban (gone now), that why I tried the unplug thing.

Any way he could try unplugging the compressor with the AC on or turn off the HVAC to rule out the compressor failing. If that is what it is the squeak should stop.

you are correct, that is one thing to try

I had an awful squeel in mine that lasted off and on about 10 minutes then stopped and was quiet
knowing it didn't heal it's self started checking
I pulled idler first and held it to my ear and spun it and could hear the bearings rattle, that happend to be the problem but could be any of the three ad to my way of thinking if one little bearing was bad at 120k miles they should all be replaced

Yeh I'm at 203000, so I'm replacing the compressor, idler, tensioner, and serp belt. Water pump is 1 yr old and alt is 4 yrs. And I already have the dual alt hose.

I developed a sqeaking noise on my old truck, and I thought that it was the serpentine belt. So I bought one and had it put on and it seemed to quieten it down some, and then like 3 days later the water pump went out and ruined the new belt that I bought. Just my experience.
