Hey guys my truck just clicks when I try to start it. So, like a real dork I replaced the starter without researching and it still clicked. Then, miraculously after a couple times it started and continued to start for a few weeks. But today, it's doing the same thing. I'm wondering if it's the relay on the fender. The wire off it is getting hot. I tried to get a screwdriver on it to try and bypass it but it sparked and still just clicked again every time I tried. Is it probably the $13 relay?
before replacing that solenoid try cleaning off the contacts. also take off the solenoid and clean behind it. those solenoids ground through the body and into the fender via the two screws so thats an easy fix. i like to dab a lil dielectric grease on anything metal to metal to ease installation and ward off any corrosion. and just for kicks... have you measured your volts at the solenoid? should be above 12.5, ideally above 13v.
I'm away from home a hundred miles so 90% of my tools are there. No idea on the voltage. The thing that gets me is it will do this for a awhile then it will be fine.
It might be bad cables, sometimes they can go to heck inside the insulation and you can't see it.
And an easy way to check for that if you don't have a meter is to turn the key to start and let it click for 20 seconds or so. Then jump out and grab all your battery cables. If you find one that's hot you've either got loose connections or a corroded cable.
