confused, need advice

I've been looking around for quite awhile now for a ford truck. My specifics are: 1997-1997 F150 XLT S/C SWB. Now it seems that the price ranges are ridiculous. They go from 12K for a high km truck, to 20k for a low km 1997. Keep in mind these are Canadian prices and kilometeres. I've found one truck but I need some real advice on this one:

It's a 1997 XLT S/C SWB with a very small dent in the passanger side box over the fenderwell. It's loaded (of course) and has 90K on it (54000 miles). The dealership is asking 19,900CAD. Now I had offered 16,500 and they said no way. They said they could do it for 17,200. I said if I have to come up that much I would want them to put a box liner in. They said for another $100, 17,300, they would do that. So it was a deal. And then the sales guy added another $1250! I said what's that for, and he replied that it's the GST (Canadian Taxes at %7). Well I had a bit of a fit because that price was supposed to include the GST, that's specifically what I had said to him when I made the offer. So he says they can't sell the truck at a loss (yeah right a loss) and I left without the truck.

What do you guys think. Is this truck worth $18,550? I should I just walk away....

Thanks very much for reading.

David

For comparison: we have a '97 F150 XLT Supercab shortbox 4x4 on our lot with 62,000 mi. (98,000 km?). All the usual XLT equipment w/ 4.6 V8 and auto., plus a cab-back spoiler, bug deflector, bedliner, tubular cab steps and lighted windshield visor. The truck is flawless; the previous owner was a fanantic about taking care of his vehicle. Our price on that is $12,995US, and we're a "no-dicker-sticker" dealer. You'll have to convert that to CAN dollars, because I can't remember the formula. Hope that helps.

1956 where are you located? Do you have a website to view the truck?

You can't compare CAN and US prices, it's apples and oranges. Trucks in general are worth far more south of the 49th than they are on the Canadian side, thus the thriving export market for used Canadian trucks.

$18,500 sounds pretty high to me for a '97, I'd shop around some more before I paid that. Doing your homework and being patient is the key to a good deal.

The truck is not on the website yet, but I'm trying to get it on there. As soon as it is, I'll let you know. Apparently, new trucks in Canada are much cheaper than the same vehicle in the US, even allowing for the exchange. If that is the case, then what Waxy says is very true, because the lower new truck prices devalue the used car market. The lower new-truck prices allow more people to buy new vehicles, therefore the dealers have to lower the used-truck price to make it more atttractive. Now I have to find out WHY the prices are so much lower in Canada.

P.S. We're located just outside Rochester, NY, about 60 miles east of Buffalo.

thanks guys. as much as I don't want to I'll have to pass this one up. I just can't justify spending that much on a 97. Anyone know what the black book is on the 97s?

I would say depending on the condition of the truck that price is a little high but not to bad. Trucks like that on our lot go for about $16,000 or so. We don't see a lot of 97's on our lot though, more 99's and they go for about $20,000 not including tax. Location makes a difference too, where are you located?

Hi Canadianfordman,

I'm located in Alberta (Edmonton). But I wouldn't have a problem traveling almost anywhere in Canada to pick up the right truck for the right price. This truck was listed at 19,900 and I originally offered 15K, the sales guy came back from his manager and said too low but I'm pretty sure if you offer 16,500 you'll get it, all in including tax. Then as you saw in the first post his manager came in, took over, and started raising the price, and THEN added GST. What is it with GST anyway? I just don't understand how GST can be charged twice on the same vehicle? Once when it's sold new and again when it's sold used? That seems like double dipping. There have been a few cases in Canada recently with the government charging billions of dollars (illegally) for g.s.t and I would say this is another one of them...

David..................so what's your point? No such thing as an "honest politician".

As for your new truck, find a dealer/saleperson who'll stick to the original deal. I bought my previous '95 F250 XLT in August of '97 from Budget Truck Sales, a division of Budget Rentals. It was fully loaded, exceptionally clean, had 12,500km on the clock for $18,500 on the road, with a year and a half to go under warranty!

They gave me all the service records for the truck, and literally fell over backwards to help.

I saw the truck on the lot one afternoon, and completed the deal over the phone, as they're 90 miles away. When I had a minor problem with the truck, they delivered a loaner truck, picked mine up and dealt with the problem.

The only reason I bought new from a Ford dealer instead of returning to them was the lack of '02 dually's in Canada at the time.

Check 'em out

Rick

What do people know about the engines in the 97s. It seems as if the V8s came in 4.6L and 5.4L. I've found another truck, 97 F150 4x4 XLT S/C SWB with matching topper with a 4.6L V8. I thought I read somewhere that these were not good engines?

The Canadian Government eliminated the 15% manufacturers tax and replaced it with the GST for the sole purpose of Receiving MORE TAX money.

Before the 15% M/T was hidden but it was only made up ONCE.

The GST (Gouge & Screw Tax) was to put more Billions $$$$$ in the coffers.

This is why it is worded this way so whatever happens you have to pay it
G = Goods
S = Service
T = Tax

If it is a Good or service it is taxed > Now, what is there that ISN'T a good or a service ?

Sounds like a real nice truck at a good price.

Did you buy it privately or through a dealer?
