Dealers around here have F150's & E150 vans - not many but 1-2 seem to be around at several of the dealers in town. They'll rent the 150 or a van for local folks who just need a truck for a day.
I guess this is about the $19 a day price? But read the small print. You have to deliver the truck to the same location and there is MILEAGE CHARGE.
Have heard the story when customers not reading the fine print paid 5 times more mileage fees than the daily rental. Also some car rentals pull the trick with "in state only" discounts. Lot of Californians rent a car for weekend getaway to Las Vegas or Reno. Guess what? New cars have build in GPS that shows you crossed the state lane. Here goes $600 discount.
just never seen a u-haul pick up before here on long island.(far different than NYC) it was an out of state plate on it....just dont remeber from where. i guess they are common elsewhere? we see plenty of vans and box trucks just not any new f150's.
License plate on uhal means nothing. They rotate the equipment between the states while keeping original plates. Might give them tax advantage as well.
I used to do moving while in high school and we used uhauls all the time. They pretty much all have arizona plates, thats where UHaul has a main office and registration is cheap. All the trailers have a different state, I forget which one, but that is for tax reasons. Trailers are super cheap in that state, I looked it up I just cant remember what state it is now The registration is different because they are rental trucks, so it wouldnt be the same as a normal vehicle registered in those states, and I believe thats why those chose the states they did to register them in.
The Uhaul pick up is the same price as the smallest van. Same mileage charge too. If you get the smallest van it comes with a larger fuel tank, so it takes longer for the needle to drop (you have to replace used fuel). That way when you take it back, the needle hasnt moved and you dont have to pay for fuel. I almost never filled up the tank because the needles on the vans dont move very much.
Uhaul used to use chevys for the pick ups but now most of them are F150s.
I read somewhere that those companies are forced to have some vehicles registered in each state they operate. Probably the law still leave them slag to register most of them in the state with lower cost. We do have a good number of expensive RV in California... with Montana license plates.

U-Haul vehicles are all 100% registered in Arizona with apportioned plates!! All there stuff also has fleet tags on it if you ever look close at one. The trailers
are registered in a few states if I remember right. Hawaii and Alaska U-hauls are registered in there own state and are not apportioned.
While all the trucks have Arizona plates the trailers have the plates from the state that they are manufactured in. So a trailer built in Missouri has Missouri plates and so on so forth.
One other thing to note is that its somewhat uncommon at least here in Kansas/Missouri area for a franchise dealer to have a pickup to rent as most are restricted to corporate owned stores. Maybe different regions run things differently but I would be surprised.

Same here in CA. only the REAL UHaul location have the pick ups.
