hello, well my transmission seems to be getting hot, my autometer gauge tells me its hitting 230 and thats when the dash gauge sees the yellow and creeps into the red. i bought the truck with 212000km on it and it now has 240000km which its my daily driver to work and most of the time it runs between 140 and 180, around town it shows 200 degrees all unloaded, then for the frist time since ive owned the truck i put on a 1500lbs camper and a 1500 lbs trailer, goin around 20km/h up hill on a logging road it overheats which this truck should haul alot more on it without overheating, the fluid was changed 5000kms ago and new filter, the oil what came out was dark and smelt not so good. the truck has a older hypertec programmer of some sort, just wonder what i should do, i bought a external cooler to add and flush the trans with mercron 5, and i dont have money for a 3000 dollar rebuild, and thoughts or advice would help me a bunch guys thanx!
I would put the tuner in stock tune and start saving up for a rebuild. Seems the trans goes out at the wrong time. With what you said about the fluid and temps, I would think you are about to find the money soon.
Slow speed with large loads and backing up with those loads are the road to death for this tranny. As Rick said, start saving for your new tranny....but get one from either John Wood (west coast) or BTS (east coast). Then you don't ever have to worry about your tranny again.

It should, but stock it doesn't have enough transmission cooling to do what you're asking. Hauling 3,000 pounds uphill at 20 km/hr on a dirt road is TOUGH on a transmission. There is very little air going over the cooler, and the cooler is undersized.
You probably can fix this with a 6.0L cooler. Replace the stock air to oil cooler out front with a cooler from a 6.0L. That may prevent a transmission failure.
yeah this isnt sounding good haha, well i was looking and there is no external cooler on the truck right now, the lines just got to the radiator, thats why i bought a big air to oil cooler, whats the 6.0l cooler look like thats so great to put that in against a aftermarket cooler? i bought a 11"by11" by 1 1/2" thick tru cooler. and about a rebuild ive been lookin alot into this and theres about a million different things that can be done, i want to rebuild it myself and was looking at the ats converter and clutch overhaul kit which is around 1800 dollars, then ive started reading about this valve body and am not sure wut to do about that, i would deffinalty like a firmer shift becaue 1-2 is real slow and soft same with 2-3 and i would like to do the mod to control locking up the converter as i please, and why cant u lock the converter in 1st gear?
If your truck doesn't have an external cooler then someone removed it after it left the factory. ALL 2002 Superduty automatic trucks had both a radiator cooler and an external cooler when they left the factory.
thanx for the pictures, yeah it does have it just took me awhile to find it because its so small. took the front grill and bumper off to get it out, it was packed full of mud from the previous owner, not one part you could look through it. so now that its clear it acually might work a bit now.
Good find on the mud. Also make sure the trans bypass valve is not sticking. Mine was sticking and I would hit 220 before installing the bypass delete.

Here's a picture of my stock tranny cooler full of crud, beside it is my 6.0 cooler I put in,towing about 7500# yesterday, mostly hills and mountains,95 degrees out and my trans temp stayed around 150 to 160...
It's on the passenger's side of the transmission. It is in the tube that goes between the two cooler lines.
It's purpose is to maintain flow if the cooler circuit is restricted. This flow goes to the rear of the trans where it is used to lube the rear half of the transmission. If the flow is restricted or blocked the trans will die a very quick death.
If you remove the bypass and the cooler circuit is restricted your first indication that there is a problem is the transmission turns to junk and stops working. If the bypass is in place and it gets restricted the temperature will start to climb and you can stop before destroying the transmission.
well i will leave the bypass alone then, im still trying to get all the crap outa the intercooler and rad then ill reinstall the trans cooler and see what happens, i know its on its way out but im gonna baby it. whats your guys' take on the ats rebuild kit and torque converter?
