Clark tranny
I've heard on hear that overdrive Clark tranny's from school buses
will work on my truck. If this is true what one do I start to hunt for. It will need to go from a 400 and then into a np205.

I remember a few years back a mag did an article on these monster trannies, and if I'm correct, Clark had about 15 versions of the medium-duty tranny and only one of them was ideal for 4x4s. It must have been the one with a granny-low and a fifth-speed overdrive.

Yeah, Clark made many different versions of this tranny and very few of them have 5th gear OD. Making it work in your truck is straightforward (bellhousing, clutch linkage, X member, etc), tho it is a large and heavy box. Hope this helps, good luck!

I am a big fan of the Clarks, they are sturdy and fairly cheap. But some of them are too big for a pickup. The one you want for one of our trucks would be the 280 series. I looked for a few years for an OD model and nver found one. I got one with 6.99/4.09/2.24/1.47/1.00 gearing and plan on changing the axle gears, from 4.56 to 3.50s. For me, a clark was the best option, because, the newer ZFs don't fit an FE bell pattern. But if I had a 400 I think that I would be looking at the ZF from behind a newer 460, some of them have the same T-case pattern on the back as your np205 DF
