Small bang bang bang right in a row very fast is limited slip chatter. Even with the modifier, a new set will chatter for a bit until it settles in. At least that was my experience when I had them on my Town cars.

There's a trade off no matter what you do.

For me I tow 14k-15k lbs about 6-8 times a summer at no more than 100 miles or so each way. I tow 8k + lbs probably an additional 1500 miles and less than 8k lbs another 500 miles. The remaining 2-3k miles a year is spent running emty hunting or for small loads that I need a pickup box for be it furniture or what ever. So I total about 6k-7k miles a year with about 1/2 of that towing some type of trailer that's likely at or above 8k lbs. When towing heavy (more than the fifthwheel @ 11k lbs) I tow at speeds around 60-65 and otherwise I like to cruise around 70 mph with less. When emty I push towards 75 mph on the highway and I don't use it around town as a daily driver very often. Terrain wise I run mostly rolling hills but I find the wind to be a larger factor as it seems it's alway blowing 20mph against whatever direction I'm driving. For me 4.56s were a trade off between getting the RPMs where I can tow occasionally in OD and have the RPMs between 2200-2500 and in D when the going gets tough with the rpms between 3000-3300 or so. This works well for me. With 4.88s it would put me at 2600-2700 rpm in OD at 75 mph which is probably 1/3 of my total mileage every year. The way it is with the 4.56s I'm already pushing 2500 rpms at 75.

Also, 4.88 would render 2nd gear almost usless if needed when pulling a load up significant hills at higway speed. 2nd at 65 mph would put you over 5000 rpms. Also towing in 3rd at 70 mph would yield 3,500 rpms which is getting a little high to run if you plan to do this for a significant amount of time. The 4.56s put me at about 3250 at 70 in D and as I found, it pulls very strong when setup like this, however fuel mileage suffered greatly.

All of this is of course assuming the use 285/75/16 (32.8") tall tires. Right now mine are just about wore out and I do notice my rpms a slightly higher than what the calulator shows. It really comes down to how you plan to use your truck and what things your willing to compromise.

I spent a Godawful amount of time working the numbers to determine what gear ratio I wanted before I chose 4.56's in my Ex. I tow a TT at about 9000lbs, and I tow on road and off road, to boot.(I mean off road. like as in not dirt roads, I go overland to camp in the woods) I camp boondockig in the woods, and at commercial campsites.
I have ARB airlockers and with the 4.56's, I was able to put enough power on the axle that I broke a axle shaft a few weeks ago. (getting ready to put in some aftermarket 4340 axles)

Considering the mpg, the weight, and needed power, 4.56 hit it just about right for me.

Now, if you were pulling a 13 or 14K Fifth wheel TT regularly, I would probably say, yeah, get the 4.88's. But since it is occasional, I think you made the right choice with 4.56.

Yep, I agree with the 4.56s after driving it a bit more. I think the 4.88s would've simply been to much gear, atleast for my use anyway.

I never did hear any chatter and I can say the LS does work as I've tromped on it a few times now so they must've used the right amount of friction modifier.

Lastly I can report that my slight howl has almost completely disappeared. I don't know if they made an adjustment when changing the breakin oil or if it had to do with using Amsoil Sever Gear or it just needed a good workout with the 600 miles I put on towing th fifthwheel down to the badlands but none the less it certainly quieter than it was when new. I just notice this last week so I don't know if it just got quieter all the sudden or if it was a slow progression. I did have the front pinion seal leaking however that was taken care of last week so I should be good to go. This week the ol F250 will be hauling a 1957 Restored Allis Chalmers D17 and a 1954 McCormick Deering Super WD-9 to a local Threshing Show. Needless to say with the amount of towing I've been doing and the size of the loads I'm very glad I made the switch.

just seeing this thread steve. sounds like you are finding the very same as i did when i went 4;10's to 4:56's back in 06 with mine. 4:56's seem to be the max in lower gearing for the highway and a major increase in the towing ability of the v10

been busy running my restoreation.hotrod shop,at least till irene and lee flooded us right out of business and fema totalling mine and 4 other shops near mine. 3 feet of water and mud the second time was enough for me anyway.

Yeh, without different transmission gearing or larger tires I really think the 4.56s are the way to go. 4.88s might be alright but I'm certain anything deeper would be to much gear to be practical and even the 4.88s are probably getting close to that with anything near a stock tire.

I have any idea what your going through dealing with FEMA and a flood as the city I live in, Minot ND, also experienced a flood that set new records dating back more than 100-years.
