My front tank has a little drip so I'm gonna replace it. Has anyone done this before? How hard is it? Also ebay has 16 and 19 gallon tanks, which one do i need? Can i reuse the straps?
It's not too bad of a job. Pick up a new sending unit lock ring and o-ring from the local parts store for the new tank. You'll probably end up needing new clips for the fuel lines so pick those up while you're there too (they're cheap) Sized for 3/8" and 5/16" I believe. You can re-use your straps if they're in good shape. Pretty sure you'll need the 19 gallon. Just make sure it's safe for diesel fuel (not galvanized) as the diesel fuel can eat off the galvanization and not so kindly redeposit it in your filter, IP and injectors.
Measure the size of your current tank and replace with the same. 16 or 19 gallon. The sending units don't seem to be the same.
Should be able to reuse the straps if they are in good shape.
I recommend painting the tank to slow down the rusting process so the replacement will last longer.
I was talking to the guy on ebay which has a replacement parts store, he said the tank is safe for diesel fuel, then i asked him if it was galvanized, he said it was, so i asked if the inside was galvanized, he said he's not sure but that there is a coating inside... think this tank will be okay to use??? Its only $89 shipped, which my wallet will really appreciate... even comes with a new lock ring and o-ring...
Thats a good deal, as long as its not galvanized. What brand is it? Perhaps you can contact the manufacturer and find out for sure. I know Spectra makes tanks for our truck and they are Ni-terne coated, which looks similar to galvanized, but it really a nickel/lead plating.
Spectra tanks are suppose to be okay for diesel though right? The leak just got worse and i think ill just go buy a spectra from advance if those tanks are okay...

So spectra tanks are okay to use with diesel fuel?
I haven't had any problems... Not sure what my front tank is at the moment, but the rear one that I pulled off was a Spectra replacement. I thought it had rusted through (again..) but turns out the fuel sender was leaking. I had already ordered a new Spectra so its going in, but nicely painted to hopefully keep the rust out for a bit longer.
