Have 17K miles and have picked up an annoying squeak from somewhere in the front wheels. Only does it at low speed and stops when brake applied or steering wheel is turned. Does NOT do it when taken to dealership (twice). Explanation was "floating" brake pads and there was nothing they could do unless they heard it. Inspection by them showed everything normal....any ideas?
Based on what you just said I would have to agree with your dealer. sometimes the pads can lightly contact the rotor and make that annoying sound. Maybe changing to some new pads would help.
Pull the caliper off and put some new high temp brake grease on the caliper slides. It eould also give you a chance to properly inspect the piston seals and other parts.
Checked center cap and all is well. Called friend mechanic up north and he said it is usually a slight ridge forming on the wheel drum and a good turning would help it. Honest opinions only...would I be better off just installing some serious after-market brakes for this truck?
Depends upon your usage. I pull a very heavy trailer and have not found the stock brakes lacking. Ford added an exhaust brake which decreases the need for service brakes. I have never heated them up much nor needed to stop any sooner than I have. So far so good.
