Hey everyone. Thinking about getting a my first diesel truck. Looking at a 2008 F250 XLT, crew cab, 4x4 with 54000 miles on the 6.4. The dealerships asking price is $28995. Is this a good first diesel truck and what do you think of the price? Thanks in advance for any input.
You have to do some research. If it is a Ford dealer have them pull the service history on the truck. I'd stay away from a truck that has had a tuner. I'm not saying I wouldn't put one on but you don't know how it was treated by the previous owner. Is it a Job 1? Some of those had radiator problems.
Price is too high but that is the nature of asking prices I guess. You'll want to ask for an OASIS report, if it is not at a ford dealer have them call the local dealer and they should be able to pull it, bought ours at a Chevy dealer and there was no problem getting it.
Be aware these 6.4L's get pretty poor mileage, under 14-15mpg in most cases.
The dealer should have room to work with you on that price. As far as the '08 goes, I've got 103K on mine, and I have had the radiator replaced once. As luck would have it, I noticed the pinhole leak before it caused me major headaches. After you get an OASIS look at the bottom of the radiator for signs of leaks. A couple of my buddies with Job 1 builds (as well as mine) leaked at the bottom of the radiator on the drivers side. Other than that, I love my truck. It has treated me well....but I have not run any programs on it, and have had it serviced at my dealership every time and I don't delay doing maintenance.
As galaxie mentioned mileage is not the best, and maintenance is not as cheap as your current gas truck.
For the most part they are great trucks, but as the others said you should be able to negotiate a lower price than what they're asking.
Just be cautious about previous mods made to the truck. If something breaks and it's discovered that it was because of neglect, misuse, or modification by the previous owner warranty will not cover the repair.
Also it's important to remember that these trucks are VERY expensive to repair when an engine or fuel system repair is necessary. It's not uncommon to see a $9K fuel system rebuild or $15K engine replacement bill for out of warranty repairs. Can you afford this when you get out of warranty? Just some things to think about.
I'd spend some time in the tech folder at the top of the forum and learn some things about these trucks.
