My power steering went out last week! I replaced the pump and still nothing. When stopping hard the brakes have a slight kickback or fluttering, but they are still being assisted...how much it's hard to tell, but the booster appears to be working to some degree.
Does the booster also create pressure for the gearbox? Where should I go with this? All the lines "appear" to be clear, but I guess it could be a clog somewhere or a collapsed line. I'm dreading replacing the gear box and still having nothing.
It literally went out in a matter of 20 minutes. Went to my sisters, everything was great, went to leave after a 20 minute or so visit, and NOTHING!!!
Any Ideas?
It's a 7.3. I had the issue of, sometimes when I wasn't giving it gas there would be no power steering, ie parking it in tight spaces...I would find myself two footing it so I was reving the engine, almost as if the power steering pump just wasn't powerful enough with out a little extra gas.
Also forgot to mention...there is now suddenly a brake light on! Master cylinder has plenty of fluid.
Also, about 3 months ago I did tighten up the steering via the bolt on the top of the gear box. I did quarter turns at a time, but all in all probably did between 1 and 2 full turns. Just enough to get rid of the majority of the wander in the steering.
Sounds like you are low on fluid or have air in the system since the brakes and power steering are tied together on your truck (hydroboost). Check your fluid level and then turn the wheel all of the way to one side and hold it there for about 10 secs then turn it the other way and hold for 10 secs. Repeat that 2-3 times and check the level and add as necessary. This will bleed any air from the system and is an easy thing to check and try before going any further.
We did that when the new pump was put on. In fact when I put the new pump on and it still didn't work I took it to a shop! They put a new pump on, thinking I had gotten a faulty pump, and it still doesn't work.
They too are baffled as too whether it's the hydroboost or the gear box... I would think it's the gear box since the brakes seem to be working, but to him the brakes don't seem quit right. and they do have a bit of kickback....but even if the hydroboost was failing would that cause the power steering to go out.
So I guess the question I need is: If the hydroboost is failing, would that cause the power steering to fail but still have somewhat enough power to make the brakes 'seem' to work but still have some kickback or am I looking at replacing the gear box?
Thanks for all the help so far guys....let's keep this brainstorming mission alive! So far I owe two guys some beers!
I second or third the air in the lines. Mine did this after the pump went out and i did a swap, took driving it for 2 weeks (did not have time to fix it) to work its way out
