Hey guys got a 73 F100 short with a Ford 9" rear. I am wanting to cut the U bolts an shocks to drop the rear .What tool would be good to use on it? I used a Sawsaw & a Dewalt 10Amp 4 1/2 Angle Grinder an still no luck. Would a 15 amp angle grinder do the job or what should i try? I have no torch to cut it off with.
I use a 10 amp 4 1/2" angle grinder for u-bolts and the like. Check your disc. Does it look glazed/is it inpregnated with little metal bits? See if putting a new wheel on helps. There should be more sparks with a new wheel, meaning its cutting better.
Use a cut-off wheel on yer grinder... not a grinding stone or flap wheel. Sorry if I am too obvious.. Typically, cut offs are a buck each at a swap meet and $1.99 at HD or Lowes.
I use two grinders cuz it's a PITA switching material... I use a cheapie 4.5-inch HF for cutting because its bearings are cheap and don't hold up to side loads... that's the job for a DeWalt.
Btw, I use old axle U-bolts for rope tie points and in the rear, to protect some auxiliary back up/work lights.
Its a brand new Heavy Duty Dewalt 10 Amp 4 1/2 Angle Grinder the one Lowes carries for bout $90. It got a metal disc on it brand new the one that came with it. An when I use it for like a couple minutes the motor gets real hot an I let it sit for like 10-15 minutes to cool off an go at it again. I was at it for over 1 hour just trying to get 1 U bolt cut off to drop the rear end an the motor got red hot an I stopped to let it cool an never could get it to cut through it. I also never could get it to cut through the shock I stopped it several times to cool an still no luck cutting through it. That it why I thought the 10 Amp is to small an I need to go to the Milwalkee 15 Amp Angle Grinder to get this thing cut. Before this we used a Saw Saw with metal blade an the blade lasted a few minutes before the Irwin blade was junk on it. I just want to cut the U bolts an shocks to drop the rear end & the cab bolts to take the cab off to sell them.
I was asking myself that the entire time I read through the posts...
"U-bolts come with nuts, don't they?"
I'm thinking you should unbolt everything instead of cutting it apart. Of course, there is no fun in taking rusty nuts and bolts apart, but it builds character.
Zip blade /cut off wheel about 1/16 thick, removed mine last week.6 ton car jacks under axle,4x4 under rear bumper steel holding chassie.Zip blade removed Ubolts in less than 5 min.Something is not right.be carefull. When ubolts were cut there was some poping going on .Alot of tension.be careful
Cut like half way through, then grab a six point socket and wrench and hook up a long pipe and use it as a giant breaker bar they will break right in half
