I have a 2004 6.0L PSD. What is the sweet spot to run the engine to make the most tq and hp while towing. Its a 4x4 cc lb with 35 tires. I have a heavy trialer and want to make sure I keep it at most tq and hp on the highway. Thanks, Chet
I believe it's 2k rpm...right at the top of the torque power band. The max horsepower isn't until something like 3300 rpm. Also, at 2k rpm (actually slightly below that) you'll get rather reasonable fuel mileage as well.
Thanks guys. I know my 7.3 mpg is right at 2000rpm. I thought the 6.0L would be a little higher because of the higher RPM motor. We'll be towing 16K up 15 and 40 freeways and was wondering where to keep the RPM's without over working the motor. Just did a bunch of work ARP's, bulletproof oil cooler and EGR upgrade and don't want the over heating problem again. Has anybody towed that kind of weight? Just upgraded all the fuilds to. Wish me luck and I'll report back either way. Chet
Max torque is actually somewhere around 2100-2200 if I remember correctly. I know that's where I feel mine.
It'll depend on your setup. 2k is the listed max TQ for these engines. Gearing will also affect where you "feel" the TQ. Just becareful with the feel gauge, it may not be as accurate as you like to think that it is. Remember what we always say about the "butt dyno"?
When towing 2300 works best for me. It keeps the egt's in check and the fuel milage reasonable,2000 and the egt's sky rocket as soon as I ask for more fuel unless I down shift.
Towing my 13k loaded 5er my truck likes right around the 2,000 to 2,100 mark. Good mileage and decent acceleration if I need it. 10 to 13 mpg towing the rig to the Sierras. Will usually average 11 going and about 13 on the return trip.
Zhilton, I couldn't find Utah Tom I guess he's not listed anymore. I know gearing guys is one of my biggest problems. I have 35 inch tires and 3.73. I am going to change this in the near future. I am leaving tomorrow for the river it will be the first trip since the up grades wish me luck. I don't want any blown head gaskets, etc.. I hope I just curred that with the ARP's, bulletproof oil cooler bypass and EGR upgrade W/ CAT ELC and Shaeffer oil's and trans fuild. I guess I should keep it in forth if I have to to keep the RPM's up also. This sound right? Chet

Yeah, gearing is what makes a difference...but in your case your more than likely doing more damage to the 5R110 (assuming you've got the automatic) than the motor. To tell if your facing any issues...pay attention to if the truck is "hunting for a gear" when your running down the highway at the speed you want. Unless your running a manual tranny, you can't tell the truck to stay in 4th. I would for sure use the Tow/Haul mode on the tranny.
The thing you DON"T want to do is LUG the motor. 6.0's hate it. IMHO the EGT's are more important than ECT/EOT and more RPM's will keep the EGT's down towing. Just keep your eyes on the gauges and the motor/trans will tell you where the sweet spot is. Check in every chance you get with "news reports" on how your motor is doing. The 5R110 is one tough trans.
