I just rebuilt my worn out 302. I swapped oout the carb for a 4bbl and I cant get the pinging to stop. It isnt timing, I have swapped the plugs for colder ones. I was reading somewhere on here about the EGR valve. Mine is still there but I dont know where to hook it up to. I just blocked the lines off. I cant run the stock air cleaner(it wont clear the fuel filter). If anyone can help me it would be appreciated. I would try rejetting the carb but I cant find any #s on it.
Would need a little more info. Did you just re-ring or bore and replace pistons. If so, what compression ratio?
What type of carb?
Are you sure timing won't help? Have you tried it with the vacuum advance unhooked?
What exhaust?
What cam?
Can you replumb the fuel line to clear the filter?
IMHO, I'd try to hook up the EGR. Get a vacuum diagram to follow. It'll run to ported vacuum through a TVS or a vacuum booster.
Just my 2¢
Greg
Also what type of carb? If you put a used factory one from another vehicle on it, it will run just as lean as the original because it's probably calibrated for an EGR too. You need to find a non-emissions holley or edelbrock that will be tuned to run without the EGR.
I bored it 30 over and running no cat. converter and glasspacks, single pipe. The cam is 292/292 adv. duration and .512/.512 lift. The carb is a used Motorcraft so it would be jetted as stock. I will try to find a vacuum diagram to follow and hook the EGR back up. I had plans on an Edelbrock 600cmf carb but my funds are almost whipped for a while. I have tried the vacuum advance unhooked as well and no difference. Thanks alot and i will try a few things this evening when done with work.
I just switched my jets from the 4bbl into the 2bbl and no pinging so i just need to jet the carb richer. thanx for the help. if anyone has any ideas where to get jets for a motorcraft carb please let me know i went all over town today and nothing. the jets i have in there now are too big.
