OK, so here we go again.... F350 with a 7.3, water pump blew water every where, no biggy, replaced it, fan clutch was fun to get off, refilled it with antifreeze. After which now my temp gauge starts out at the red line on the H and goes even higher and of course my engine light is on, I think I still have air in my system but not quite sure how to get anymore antifreeze in there when it's basically full at the radiator. I guess my question is what are the odds the thermostat is stuck, got one just in case, also got a new sensor for the temp gauge but can't find it on the motor so guessing the kid got the wrong one, did find a few others. One was unplugged and after plugging it back in my gauge read even higher.
Also ended up driving it home which was about 18 miles after I changed the pump, kept stopping and checking it, was running fine and no hotter than normal. SO what gives? Any thoughts???
What year truck, not sure that matters on the 7.3. I just did mine, i did replace the t-stat, and the temp gauge hooked in on top of the water pump. did you use new coolant? did you check to make you used the same bolts that came out.
It's a '91 F350 with the 7.3 IDI pre power stroke, all the bolts went in the same place they came out of and yes used new coolant, t-stat gets replaced in the morning. As far as mine goes on the gauge, nothing on top of the water pump, but I have one next to the t-stat, one in the block next to the timing chain and one in the head on the drivers side, also it would appear there is one I haven't found yet since I unplugged all 3 and the gauge went down but not where it normally rides, so will check it in the morning and see if it still shows Hot. I figure if it does one if not all may need to be replaced.
As long as everything went back where it came from there is no reason your gauge should not read correctly. did your truck overheat when the water pump went out. if so it is possible that you cooked the sending units for the gauge and now they are no good.
if you say so, but i have never heard of anyone else that had any luck with any aftermarket T-stats, even stant which is supposed to be the best.
i know of 6 engines that were heat seized because of aftermarket t-stats.
that is enough for me to use only ford or international parts.
there are some things i just refuse to use to save a few dollars on.

I understand what you are saying But in a pinch I would run a mr gasket unit over a stant!!! The Mr Gasket is identical to the original as it is a balanced flow design unlike the parts counter replacements which are simply a open/closed design.
