Talking Fuel Pump appreciation!

I wanted to thank those of you here that posted up the info on replacing the fuel pump! It is worlds easier unbolting the bed of the Ranger and lifting up on one end just enough to work on the pump, then it is to drop the fuel tank and mess with all the headache that goes with it!

I have replaced several "in the tank" fuel pumps on a variety of vehicles, and doing it this way on the Ranger has made it a task I dont dread! Normally I would have posted a question originally, but I searched and found the tip.. Now I cant, but wanted to comment regardless! Awesome job guys!

It did! It wasnt too difficult to diagnose the problem thankfully! With the weather being quite a bit warmer then usual, the truck was acting up. I would idle and then it would die. Go to fire it up, no start just turn over, then it would ct like it was going to go but just stumble all over itself. Once or twice it would fire, but idle low and rough. Give it gas, it would die quicker. After letting it sit a half hour sometimes it would fire right back up and get me home.

I depressed the fuel pressure release valve on the rail, and get a super fine mist. When it finally died all together, there was a trickle out the pressure relief valve. In removing the fuel lines I had no pressure what so ever at the pump.. A good sign it was toast, LOL!

I have to admit.. for the first time in a very long time it was an extreme pleasure to work on an "in the tank" fuel pump! Usually I just dread it something fierce and it takes way to long for my patience, but this was a very pleasant change! LOL!

Tell me, how many miles can one of the Ranger pumps be expected to last? My 99 has 150k miles, so I'm wondering if I should replace it proactively.

Do they give much warning before leaving us stranded?

Thanks

When it comes to the Ranger and the Explorer, both of which I currently own.. Right around 160k is when the darn things start to fail. Maybe even a little earlier at 155k.

As for much warning.. No.. They are electric. You may get lucky and it fails in bursts, allowing you to make it home, or in my case, fail in another town! LOL!
