My 78 F250 has alot of play in the steering. The truck has been sitting for several years, and I am just about to out it back on the road. I need to fix the steering before I can justify putting tags on it. It is 4 wheel drive. I was looking for a starting point to get this corrected any info would be appreciated.
Check your linkages for play. Meaning, if the pitman arm moves before everything else downstream them its time for new tie rods, drag link, etc.
If on the other hand everything moves in unison except your steering wheel in relation to the pitman arm, then its time for a new steering box. There is a little adjustability on preload but not much. Otherwise, consider going with Benchworks or Redhead... good reviews by our fellow Dentsiders.
