I wouldn't use a MLPS from Autozone. If it worked at all, it probably won't stay that way for long. I would get one from Ford and nowhere else.

My truck takes a sec to shift too. It also slips about 3 inches when put into park...which really sucks when hooking up a trailer :P

Just woke up and going to replace the NSS now. If it doesnt fix the problem back to parts store. I have an idea that it might be the linkage. It almost feels loose when i shift at times. IDK. Either way the problem needs to be fixed! Thx for suggestion on that, i never considered it. I have never greeced the manual linkage and it might just need to be tightened or something.

I checked linkage bracket, it was loose, tightened it and now it is solid shift into place. Checked voltage on the NSS and it is working up to par. Now i seem to have a insane hard shift from park to reverse. Another fellow just posted about it to. It isn't just a simple clunk, you xan see the entire truck pump up from behind. The mechanic i took it to didnt even say anything and i asked and he looked at me and said he didnt notice anything unusual with my transmission.

I had the same hard shift from park to reverse and also from reverse to park or another drive gear. The guy I bought the truck from said he had it checked out several times and they never found any issues. That being said, that transmission lasted at least 3 years like that and is probably still going (I sold the truck not too long ago).

However, since there are no adjustments on the E4OD, I'd guess there is something wrong in the valve body. Depending on the gear, the shifting is controlled by fluid in the transmission and there may be something wrong in that area.

I know, it doesn't get you closer to a solution but maybe a little info will help.

Yeah someone is having same issue and just posted about it also. There are several of us who have the issue. I am going to replace the gear box fluid next. Is there anything i can check for while i have the pan down because the gasket is starting to get a little wet.

Twice this week mine wouldn't turn over and I had to slam the shifter into Park. If it gets much worse, I'll have to find neutral just to start the thing.

If someone put a lot of effort into trying to get the thing out of Park without turning the key first, what would bend or stretch in the column? Last fall when I was in the hospital, someone tried to steal it from the hospital parking lot and ever since then I've had the sloppy shifter. I'm thinking they tried to break whatever holds in park when you don't have a key. That doesn't explain the hard shift into reverse but that also started about the same time so who knows.

There is a lock in the column that reacts to the key and brake pedal. I bet that got bent/broke.

I have a Haynes manual somewhere here. I'll look in it and see if it explains how to get to it. Thanks!

LOL well, that sounds like an easy fix but I still need to fix the column anyway. It sucks hunting for reverse then taking off in 2nd and trying to get it in Drive while I'm moving because you actually have to take it up to neutral then back down to drive. Sooner or later I'm going to hit Reverse going 50mph if I don't fix it.

Kevin-Is it the Shifter arm ITSELF that is sloppy?

THe one on my '94 broke off one day, randomly.....And its a simple thing on the inside after you look at it.....

I've seen a couple threads on here about adjusting them a bit to tighten everything back up...

I doubt you will find it there but it may be helpful to find some threads here that talk about removing the steering wheel (and replacing it). That info might give you the detail you need.
