I recently bought this truck for $2000. It has a 7.3, 4wd, 35" tires, etc. The trouble is the E40D only has 2nd gear and drive, and you have to shift between them manually. First gear and OD don't work at all. I've read that it has put itself onto "limp mode". Also the tach is not working. I am very financially stressed, and would appreciate any advice that won't cost much to try. I still think I got a good truck for the money.
WOW!!THAT Truck looks freaking mean with that front end!!
I want it lol, idc if I have to buy the truck I want that bumper lol....at least the design specs for it....
Anyway, yes it sounds like it might be your VSS(Vehicle Speed Sensor). If this goes bad, your transmission goes into limp home and dont die on me mode. I would stop driving it til F250HDXLT gets in here, he is the E4OD Guru, or David85 they are the best. I can tell from the sounds of things you should check out the thread called I HATE MY E4OD!!! on here, he is having some of the same problems...
What you describe is what happens when electrical power is cut off from the trans.
First thing to check is the fuse for the transmission computer. Also check the big wiring plug on the pass side of the trans. Make sure it is clean and tight and that the wiring harness is in good condition.
Hopefully some of the experts will give an opinion later in the day.
I'm no auto guy, but the tach has to be working for the E4OD to shift properly, from what I've read. You probably need a new tach sensor. Look at the front of the motor, to the right of the oil fill, for the 1 inch nut with 2 wires coming out of it to see if the wires are bare. This is a common spot for the sensor to fail. It is a Ford only part, cost around 90 bucks.
Yep, if your tach, speedometer, or pretty much any other sensor or wire in the truck isn't working the E4OD won't work right. You may have other problems but the tach not working will definitely cause problems for the tranny. Check the fuses and connections and if that dosen't fix it you'll probably need a new dash cluster. If it comes to needing a new dash cluster give me a holler. Give me a holler and I'll give you one, since I bought two or three for my truck before I figured out that the speed sensor wasn't seated properly! My E4 Oh Crap still has some issues that I can't figure out. On the other hand you're whole truck is probaly getting ready to crap out and you should just sell it to me, hell I'll even give you $500 more than you paid for your troubles! LOL
wow!
you got a heck of a deal on that crew cab 4wd!!!
yeah,no working tach = no properly working E40D like stated.so you need to start with this.
Electronic 4 speed Over Drive reads the vehicles speed, altitude, rpms, and your manual selector lever all by computer via sensors, which all need to be in working order.when they are, contrary to popular believe,it's a pretty dang nice tranny imho.
Thanks for the offer LAO1123, but the engine runs like a swiss watch! I changed the rpm sensor , checked the fuses, and now ill check the rest of the sensors. The tach bounces around when starting, dead otherwise.
I didn't figure you'd take that offer but heck it was worth a shot! LOL. I looked on craigslist in Sanantonio and some other Texas cities and it must be law in Texas that you have to have a Ranch Hand bumper on Ford trucks! There is a dealer in West Boerne that has a big red 1993 F350 listed about 100 times and if they would sell it cheap enough I'd fly out there and drive it back, they don't list a price though so it's probably not real cheap. But seriously if you find out that you need a replacement dash cluster let me know, I have 3 or 4 laying around here!
