Anybody on here used the sherwin williams base coat/clear coat? I went to Oreilys and had them mix up the winter green and limestome green for my 73 F100. I got the Dimension line of products. I got the hardener but forgot primer and reducer.
It says to let flash 15-20 minutes before clearing. Well im not going to be able to do that. I have to tape off everything for the two different colors when the base is dry. I am going to be painting in a garage with plastic hung up and fans pulling out dust and fumes.
So how am I going to go about doing the clear coat? It says I have to scuff and reshoot the base if not clear coated in 7 days.
Im not looking for it to be perfect, Im just doing the bed, tailgate, and hood.
On the internet type in Sherwin Williams Automotive and on this site there is a a tab at the top for contact info. Fill in the info and type in your question. They should get back to you with some answers.
How long are you planning to let it sit between coats? You should be able to do everything in a day if you plan it out right. Shoot your lighter color, then your darker color, then clear it all in a day.

Thanks for any help.
They usually mean what they say. You'll need to schedule around that.
I decided to take it all back. I'm going to get a good single stage paint that I can scuff down and clear later on if I choose.
I don't see how I can get all the base coat/clear coat done in a day when I don't have a paint booth. Plus I read alot of things last night saying the Sherwin Willams base/clear doesn't cover well or hold up that well.
I wonder if I can get the colors I need in PPG's Omni line? At first I didn't want to spend much but now Im thinking Ill raise the budget some so I don't have to repaint in a few years.
There has been body work done to the hood and bed which is why I am painting them.
ive used the sherwin williams paint n i dont like the clear it sucks everyone ive sprayed w it ive had to color tone the clear to get good results n i know that somebody is gonna say i dont know what im doin but ive sprayed alot of different kind of paints n never had trouble w the clear but to me it doesnt lay like the others but ive found if u mix a dime size spot of base in it comes out reallt nice maybe its just me but w any base/clear u do have a lot of play room w ur paint ive dont 2 tone jobs n also graphics n u cant do it all in one day i dont care how good u are just try not to go over 2 maybe 3 days w it
I'm using the SW Dimension 4D Single stage, the only bad part about it is 12 hours between final shoot and taping for the other color. I am spraying the second color tomorrow but today's paint shot like a dream and looks real smooth.
Is the single stage you used the acrylic enamel or urethane enamel? The urethane enamel is better right?
Im going back to talk to Oreilys about it tomorrow. After looking I realized the Limestone Green isn't mixed right anyway, looks totally wrong. So that has to be fixed anyway. I went today and the manager wasn't there so they couldnt do anything. So far I have 80 bucks in crap I can't use.
I guess Ill go with their single stage paint and see what happens.
I'm use to using Valspar on old tractors. So I need the people at the store to help make sure I get all compatible stuff.
You could use the Summit ( summitracing.com ) brand paint. They have a 2-stage urethane and a single stage system also. Watched a show on "Speedvision" about it and they were impressed with it. I'm planning on 'home-garage' painting my truck with it. From what I've researched on it, you can use the single stage, then come back later (after fixing the couple of runs when the hose catches on everything, the spot you had thought you have sanded, and the dent that was not there before you started...)
And use the 2-stage clear coat afterwards.
They have reducers for any climate that controls your garage...
Has anyone used the Summit Paint before? How did you like it?

Reason: mis spelling

Could very well be the same paint. Sherman Williams makes Duplicolor paints. I read a thread on Summit Paint, just can't remember who makes it for them.
I've painted for many years and my personal preference has been PPG from primer to clear, IMO the product is always very consistent. I think that PPG has recently replaced Omni/Valueline with Shopline, which I have also used. Generally, their Shopline has a bit less pigment than their higher-line series such as D/DP/DB series. My local supplier will not use Shopline to match existing paint, but its been fine for following a factory code mix or just selecting an available color.
They also have what they call a "compact series" of products that allow a wet on wet application of primer/base/clear but I've not used them as it makes for a lot of painting at one time.
There are other brands of course, I'm only offering info on the PPG stuff. I will continue to use it because it give me consistent results.
Some pics with actual applications:
This is a pull-cart I built for grandbaby, painted with Shopline base/clear, graphics are Auto-Air water-based paint airbrushed under the clear. In this case, clear was not wet-sanded/buffed
My 57 was painted with PPG Deltron (DB series), cleared, and wet-sanded/buffed.
Ok guys I kinda changed my mind again. I went back and got their Acrylic Enamel in winter green, reducer, hardener, and primer. I'm tired of making trips back and forth so I just went with it. Bad part is I will still have to make one more trip.
They still cannot get the Limestone Green right, nothing shows up for it. I gave them the Ford # M5021 and what I think is a PPG code # 2412. They tried a Sherwin Williams # that should have been it 99094 and that ddin't work. What do I need to do so they can mix my Limestone Green so I have everything in one brand? Thanks for any help.
They said they didn't think that was a factory Ford color but I know it is.
