I have a 4.0 in my ranger 4x4. It has an idle speed of 1500 at start up. It drops to 1200 in about 20 seconds. In gear it runs about 800-1000. I feel this is too fast, although I can't find out what rpm it should be. I have replaced the IAC with no change in this pattern. Any ideas?
Maybe Ken can correct me on this, but my understanding is that you need to reset the computer when you change the IAC or otherwise the computer might continue to use old stored information and fail to properly adapt to the new IAC.
After you check for and fix any vacuum leaks, you might try disconnecting the negative battery cable for about 15 minutes. This will reset the computer. Then, you should drive around town for a while to give the computer time to re-learn and hopefully adapt to your new IAC and set a proper idle.
I have a 96 4.0 in the Ranger 4x4. I have all ready tried the disconnect trick by nothing changed. If I push on the EGR valve, it does make a change to the RPM and has also made the check engine light go on. I may go there next and replace it!
ok, I replaced the EGR and the idle did smooth out bit it is still at 1200 before I put in gear. I can't find any vacuum leaks. I did disconnect negitive cable for 20 minutes. Any clues? What is the normal idle speed for a 96 4.0??
