lower gears

I'm running 1995 f150 4x4 302 with 3.30 gears with 32 swampers. I run mud drags 4 times a year. How low could I go and still be ok on the road. I run low lock 150 ft track just hit 3rd gear at the end. 4.56 or 4.10 any help.

The "happy median" gear ratio(good power and decent milage) for a 5.0 with stock sized(28.8") tires is 3.73, to get the same with 32" tires you need 4.30 gear and if you want a little more juice go to 4.56.

the problem being nobody (that i've found) makes a 4.27 or 4.30 gear set for the TTB dana 44

Mud drags open in the front. Makes it so you can steer.

open would be fine but LS would be better. so you can still burn all 4 wheels in a straight line. and if you slip a tire you still are using ALL your power (due to the action of the LS).

but honestly if you are ALREADY doing mud drags then i would test the waters with just re-gearing front and rear. ask around what the other guys use and go from there. i guaranty you will be able to sell the new larger carrier from your front TTB, (people are always gearing up) if you decide later to go LS or a locker

i assume there is a locker/spool in the rear? gotta have something in the back!

but what do you do with your truck the rest of the 361 days a year?

IMO manual hubs are a MUST if you have LS or locker in the front (i absolutely do not trust auto hubs)

lockers are very rough on a front end when you are trying to steer. there is allot of pressure on steering components and tires moving side to side -especially if you air down for

A LS is no better than a open in a mud drag. They both will send power to the tire with the least amount of tracton.

IMO a ls has no place in the off road world.

(Unless its a power loc)

I love my gearing. Loved it when it was 302 E4OD on 33s with them too
