I have a 2002 F250 with diesel and auto. The trans temp gauge never moves cold or hot it reads halfway up normal. Is there an easy way to see if it is the gauge or sender?
The gauge typically doesn't move until it reaches 230F I believe. When it does move, it moves up rather quickly, so be prepared to pull over once you see it nudge upwards.
I would get a ScangaugeII to monitor it. I know the earlier diesel trans oil cooler (prior to 6.0L) has the smallest one out of all the engines available.
When it is colder out (winter time), the gauge would be down low when you first start it.
The transmission temp gauge will sit right in the middle anytime the trans is between 50°F and 230°F. There is nothing to fix here, if you want more specific readings you need an aftermarket gauge.
I have yet to tow since I put in my Auto Gage but I thought it wasn't working b/c it would barely move. It will "spring" into position when I start the truck so I know the gauge was getting power.
While trying to work out my false overheat I was putting the truck through a "stress" test and noticed the gauge moved but never past 150 deg. Like others here I recommend an aftermarket. But I wouldn't stop at the Trans. Temp. I also have an Oil Pressure and Water Temp. all in a 3-gauge a-pillar pod and there is LOTS of help on here how to install one of those!!
