i am having on hell of a time getting my fan clutch off, i am not sure if i am turning the right way. There is an arrow on it but i am not sure if that is to tighten or loosen
turns off backwards.left hand thread like stated.
a good thump with a 3lb and chisel, and she's ready for the trash can,so you can bolt your electric fans on there.
here is where i screwed up. I am replacing the water pump, i just pulled the pump with the fan clutch and fan still intact. The damn thing is really hard to hold still and try to turn plus i do not have a wrench big enough so i have been trying channel locks with no luck.
oh boy.
well,id bolt it back together.
then id take a hammer and chisel to it.you really shouldn't do that if your planning on reusing the thing haha, but thousands of shade tree mechanics around the world have done it for years.so use your own judgment.
it works super easy.
you're still stuck with trying to figure out a way to get it tight again.you should consider just making a wrench out of plate steel or seeing if the auto parts stores has one in a loaner set that would work.then you can properly tighten it back up when your finished with the water pump replacement.don't forget to grab some lock tight!!!! you don't want that old energy hog flying off into the rad!
now would be a good time to swap to electrics though seriously.but best of luck.
I think i am giving up for the night, going to try and get the right wrench tomorrow. i have the damn water pump GRKed to the bench and the biggest set of channel locks i have and i cannot get it break loose so i am thinking bigger wrench with bigger cheater bar and if that dont work we will have our self a new fan clutch
Ensure you replace the water pump bolts in the correct locations or your troubles will have just started....... their should be a paper in the box with the new water pump.
I did, i placed each one in a seperate spot as they came out. The new pump came with a couple bolts, not as many as i took out and they where different sizes so i just used the old ones.
Check you parts store and see if they have a fan clutch wrench set you can borrow or rent. Lisle makes a wrench kit that goes on a air hammer. They work very well. I bought a set a few years ago and use it on lots of things other then fan clutches. Works nice on hydraulic hoses in tight spots..
I got everything back together and topped off the rad, took for a drive to get it up to temp and everything seemed to be working well until i got back and there was a steady stream of water coming out. It looks to be coming from the lower hose but i can't tell everything is soaking wet. I guess i will let it dry and start it back up and see what happens.
I am not sure if i just got the belt wet or what but this thing is just whining like crazy. It is 90 degrees so i wouldn't think that it would take very long to dry off. Its been put back together since about 11 this morning. Could i have put something together wrong that would cause this?
now would be the best time to replace the upper and lower hoses anyway.
it's a good idea to just swap them every flush,or whenever the time/hrs/ mileage is unknown.
sure beats waiting until they let loose on the side of the road.
