Well then Paul I'm with Jason, try it without the hubs and/or service them to see if that does it. Kevin's info is very interesting also, may be something internal in the auto/manual hubs.
As the hubs cost almost $275 a piece, I will try Guzzles repair. This truck is starting to drive me crazy will all the little quirks it has developed. I am still chasing the lack of power. That 7.3 should be able to lite up the tires and surely be able to pull a 15% incline with the speedo pegged and empty. It won't! I guess I need to find one of the local FTE'rs near me and let them have a look. Too bad I could not go to TN this year. They sure helped with the throttle pedal problem last year.
Have you tried the 7.3 forum? I know the 6.0 guys are experts and willing to help. I'm not too familiar with the 7.3, but just found this on low power:
In cases where the engine performance is in question, as evidenced by a boost reading below the
specification for the vehicle, the following is true:
If neither of the wheels rub, the blades are not damaged, and the shaft and wheels spin freely, there is no
reason to replace the turbocharger. In cases where performance is low and no fault lies with the turbocharger,
the low performance will be due to low fuel delivery, a restriction or leak in the intake or
exhaust systems, or worn engine components (low compression, check crankcase pressure).
The bang is when it comes out of 4WD under throttle, like it is not fully engaged.
So you're driving down the road in 4x4, then you let off the gas (diesel LOL) pedal and coast, then switch it back to 4x2, then you get back on the accelerator and it bangs?
just from reading, it sounds very much to me like it is the chain slipping on your transfer... you should be able to find a junkyard or used replacement for under $100.

Jason:
I am starting up a hill. I know the hill is skippery. I lock 4WD and start. I hear a bang, the truck lurches, then goes up the hill. I do not think it is the chain in the transfer case. The noise is from the front and I can feel it in the steering wheel. I did find a hub that would not unlock, changed it and I replaced the rubber hoses from the frame to the hubs but have not been able to test it yet.
Yet, if it is the transfer case chain, it is no biggie to drop the case and replace the chain and gears. I have done it several times, once on a trail.
Hi, did you solve the problem? Im having the same problem, Its the hubs, Iv now got new ones, they worked for a little bit, but now its gone back to "slipping" again. also my transfer is gears so its not a chain issue.
I have not been able to test it yet. A drivability problem has came up and I cannot figure it out. I did move it, it was slick in the yard, put it in 4WD, but it was not under a load. It backed out of the drive without the bang. If your truck is over four years old, replace the vacuum hoses. You will need a little less than 5 feet to do it. I upgraded mine from the plain rubber to a braided hose. The old hose was swelled and very sticky. This may have been my problem. If I can get it running (no brakes), I will take it out and climb the railroad embankment and see if it bangs and let you know.
When replacing those gears, make sure you wash out that housing good. I did not think to look there and now that you mention it, I will. That pop I heard reminded me of blowing an open rearend. Same kind of noise and jerk.
Let me know what it cost you and how you did it. The gang here will want photos!
I ended up degeasing it, blowing it out with air and running round the inside with a telescopic magnet, then I welded all the spider gears to each other, threw in a couple chunks of steel and kept welding.
Im in australia, so the options i do have i have to wait around 3wks for parts and its only an old '75 250 so itll do for now.
Tryed it out this arvo, went well!
Hey WV Gang. I have a problem I cannot find and with this back, it makes it even harder. Is there anyone near me that can put a second set of eyes on my truck and tell me where they think this pop noise is coming from? I am in Hansford, Between Montgomery and Chelyan.
Just answer the string, then we will go from there.
Yeah, it seems to be. Took the girl for her inspection and she pissed braked fluid in the inspection bay. Guess she was made. I was going to see about fixing it today and now the batteries are down. The damn thig is just like a woman. always on your nerves, then on your ***. LOL
