L8000 transmission advice

My L8000 is a 1988 model with a Cat diesel (3208) and an automatic.
I was pulling a load up a hill and the truck stopped moving. Engine was still running but I couldnt make it up the hill. I backed down and went another route. When I got out, something smelled burnt. Nothing leaked out.
Should I change the transmission oil and filter? What oil should I use? How much does it hold? Thanks, guys!

As the fluid gets hot, it thins out and makes the engine rev higher than normal. Change the fluid with a thicker oil. It's in allisons servuce spec that it can use dextron3, hydraulic oil, certain engine oils, and transyd. As to how much, you need the model number first. Likely, its an MT643 or 653.

On a 3208, you either have a screw to adjust, or shims to restack for the fuel rate

Dont be afraid to adjust the max rpm. They can happily run to 3200 rpm.
