88 bronco ll with a dead 2.9 . Got a good deal on a 4.0 from an early explorer. any suggestions on what from the explorer must be used to make the swap work . Also the bronco is a 5 speed and the explorer is an automatic. Thanks
If you can put both trucks side by side, best thing is to swap everything from the Explorer: dash assy with wireing and engine wireing along with the engine and tranny. Going that way would be like making the B2 a Explorer and you don't have to worry about rigging up wires to make it work. If all will be bolt in as long as the Explorer is 93 or older, 94 and up there are changes.
I have a 89 B2 and a 93 explorer, both dash assy are the same and would bolt in, I am not sure about the 88 if you have the newer style dash or the older style. I was going to do the 4.0L swap at one time but as I have blown 2 A4LD trannys I am thinking of other options, 302/Aod swap or go for the gusto and stuff a 300 I6/aod in there! That 300 I6 will take some body mods for sure as the engine is longer than the engine bay of the B2! I have to replace the firewall anyway as it rusted out so the 300/aod hopefully will start soon after I get my 84 F250 4x4 back from the dead.
Finally found a good 2.9 for the BroncoII. Glad I used a 2.9 instead of going the 4.0 route. Runs great, looks original. I just dreaded all the wiring changes. My other vehicle ia an 03 superduty V-10. The Bronco II sure is easier to get around in.
Welcome. Yup there are differences. Dash and pedal assy for sure. As well as fenders, hood, grill, and frame ends and bumpers. Ford did put a few 4.0's in Bronco II's in 90. I remember reading a thread a long time ago about someone looking for the emission numbers to do the swap in CA.
Would have been great if Ford would have stuck the 4.0 in the BII, put 44 outers on the 35 TTB, put a 4R70W behind the 4.0, 8.8 in the rear, and gone a bit lower on the t-case ratio. And done a 31x10.50 tire package with 4.11 gears.
Glad you found a good 2.9. My 89 was great with the 2.9 and A4LD while the tranny still worked.
Take a look at the ranger station, and bronco II corral. They cover everything that needs to be done to facilitate the change over, including graphics.
