5.4 Timing Procedure

I'm taking my head off my '97 Expedition 5.4. I'd like to know if anyone can clue me into the proper timing procedure. The book says I need a special cam holding tool which is mad bank so I will try to make one. It doesn't seem like it will be that difficult.

BUT, let's just say for grins and giggles that the cam moves while I have the head off. Guys have said that:

1) There are two different types of 5.4 heads and each type has their own timing procedure that can be done without special tools.

so with that in mind:

a) does anyone know which type of head I have (PI or no PI; I don't know what PI stands for)?

b) can anyone tell me the correct timing procedure for the type of head that I have using no special tools?

Oh, and can anyone give me an idea as to just how heavy the head is?

Thanks in advance.

Weird how this works. I did a search on the forum before asking the question but didn't find anything. After asking the question I did a search on the web and found an answer on this forum that looks like will give me what I need.

The link is just in case anyone else needs it:

Cheers,

Yeah, the 5.4 had NPI in 97 and 98. They went to the PI head in 99 5.4 in the trucks.
