From what I understand, you can add the AUX input to your existing configuration, you just need the plug adapter in the dash tray and then have it wired.
I skipped all of that and bought an aftermarket head unit, with USB and AUX inputs in the face. The ease of use is much better, and the sound is greatly improved.

Are you dead set on keeping the factory look?
The factory look does not really matter. I was thinking If I could find the parts from an '07 in a junk yard for cheap then I might be able to use it in the '06.
I also looked into this and the Adapter was more than a good Alpine unit so. I went alpine. And my DroidX fits in the kits pocket. Win Win, Nice and compact my cord from my phone to the radio doesnt get in the way either
I went after market also, it seemed to be the better way because you can get a head unit with basically anything. I got mine with a USB port for a flash drive to hold music and a screen and added a back up camera.
