engine block heater

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-Nov-02 AT 08:57 PM (EST)]All night, I usually plug mine in before I go to bed. I will make one last walk around the yard, check that all the car and house doors are locked and plug my truck in on the way into the house.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-Dec-02 AT 00:33 AM (EST)]that is correct all night or three days it controls its temp so you dont have to worry about it. just a follow up thought it wont hurt to inspect the wires once in a while just to make sure all is well

i am not sure but i dont think that the heater would cause a hissing. did it start as soon as you pluged it in? maybe you got a nail in one of your front tires? just a "maybe" thing

May want to consider an oil pan heater. I suspect the oil is still very cold with a engine block heater. See http://www.engine-oil-heaters.com/

I recommend using a timer instead of just leaving it plugged in.

Set it for 2-3hours before you start it in the morning. Works great.

These block heaters will eventually burn out, this leaves it to last longer.

I have one on my 96 5.8 F250. Leave it plugged until you are ready to
go! THeblock heater draws 1250 - 1500 watts , depending on the model
at time of installation. Bottom line if you leave it plugged in all night, you will have warm/hot air when you start, and the electric
required to keep the engine warm costs $1.00 to $ 1.50 per night.
Our electric rate is 08.75Cents per KWhour. That is 8 and 1/2 cents
per 1000 watts per hour, soo 1500 watts per hour is ~ 12 /13 cents per
hour. Also remember that once the block is hot, the plug will cycle
on and off. enjoy!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-Dec-02 AT 10:00 PM (EST)]I use a block heater on my 7.3 diesel with a timer and at temps in the single digits I live in the twin cities mn.I set it to come on 1 1/2 hours before I need to go to work . It fires right up and I have good heat soon after. also saves on electric costs. afterall 1.00 -1.50 a night X 30 nights =30.00-45.00 a month ! if it works with less power, why give your money to the power company? If you really want to part with it that badly you can send it to me! (just kidding of course)
as for the hissing, mine has always done it and it's never had a problem....

I haf a 91 7.3dsl and mine made the same sound. It comes from the heating element, ever dribbled water on an electric stove burner?

As for it cycling on and off by itself it does not it turns on when you plug it in and off when you unplug it. I always plugged mine in when I got home from work and unplugged it when I left, never had a problem with it.

Yeah, they stay on constantly. When the antifreeze around the heater is heated the block heater quiets down and the hissing is quieter.

The oil pan heater (model #16) runs 250 watts or about 2.5 cents per hour. They told me to leave it plugged in all night and the oil would be around 120 F in the am and the pistons around 80 F or so. MIne came in the mail yesterday. Hoping to install it this weekend. It's just peel and stick and then route the wire.
