As I am sure some of you know, as soon as you hook up a trailer, everyone around you loses their collective brains and drives like a complete moron. When I've got 14,000 lbs of truck and trailer rolling along, I can't slam on the brakes when your idiotic **** pulls out in front of me so you won't get stuck behind me...in a 25 mph school zone.
And of course, with my horse in the trailer, I'm extra pissed off, as I am not going to slam him into the chest bars just because you can't be bothered to think about physics. So I want a loud horn; I want to see people crap their pants and pray for forgiveness. I do use my horn very sparingly, so when I do lay on it, I MEAN IT!
I have done some searches -- I don't want the freight train horns that might get me arrested. I am wondering if there are loud horns other than the air horns -- that whole installing a tank thing seems kind of like a pain and frankly, I am broker than broke (see aforementioned horse). Does such a thing exist? How hard are they to put on? Or if my only option is the air horn, are there any that are simple and NOT $500 that I could maybe ask for for a gift? Thoughts welcomed!
You can add additional electric horns, but they will do about as much good as strapping a 14,000 lb trailer on the back to try and intimidate someone.
The train horns, or at least air horns like truckers use will at least get peoples attention. You can get a set of those for less than $300 with the compressor, tank, horns and all the parts you need.
Is there some law in North Carolina about train horns on pick ups? I happen to know a police type here on FTE from there we can ask if you're not sure.
I have been looking at a some train horns for awhile. I hate idiot drivers. I think that would be the perfect set up for those wonderful idiotic drivers.
you cannot go wrong with a set of Kleinn's! planned out a system from Siege that was going to run 700+, but was given a set for xmas. It has been almost 4 years, and they are still just as good as when first installed (used just about every time the truck is driven). Wife paid ~$250 at the time, but like everything, they have gone up. This is the current version of the system:
If you want to stop short of the whole compressor-horn setup-- I've read elsewhere that the stock horns for a late 90s Cadillac deville are a nice loud replacement. Rockauto has them, look up year 1996. Can't verify personally but they are on the list for eventual upgrade.

Unless they are installed on a heavy duty commercial vehicle, like a tractor-trailer rig, they are illegal in California.
I have the classic 228 from Hornblasters.com. Everything comes pre wired all you need to do is mount everything. I spent 400 but it was well worth it especially how i scare kids every day. Or when yiu go through a tunnel and blow the hon and everyone slams on their brakes trying to figure out wjere the hell a train is
years ago i saw a truck in va. the guy was a mech for Amtrak he had mounted a real train horn on his roof it was a little bigger than the roof itself and had probably 20 horns on it. in the bed he had a big tank and comp. loudest horn ive ever seen. it was a small pick up like a toyota.
Hmmm, sounds like the air horns are the way to go. I will have to look into the NC regs, I'm not familiar with laws that don't involve trailers or wildlife, LOL.
f-100, dang I would love a picture of that!
Thanks for all the links! Some very interesting options out there -- I will be reviewing and updating my Christmas list!

Late '80s Buicks and Cadillacs had 3-note horns (4-note in some cases). I mounted a set of these in front of the A/C radiator on my 4Runner (just behind the grille) and it is literally painful to stand in front of the truck when the horn blows (which happens every time the idiot alarm system malfunctions). Junkyard cheap - $10-20 should get you the whole set. Be sure you have a horn relay, as this many horns will fry a non-relay horn system.
