Okay so just had this happen out of the blue. i turn the key all the lights come on, wait to start, turn to start and nothing. jump the solenoid on the fender and starter spins it right over but wont actually fire. like the pump isnt turning on. so what happened? turned right over the other day. bad ignition switch? be kind of odd right out of the blue. checked fuses all are good, have not checked relays yet or the diode under the hood in the main fuse panel.
What year of truck do you have. When the fuel heater blew outon my 90, it took out the fuseabel link located in the wiring harness that lays on the passenger side inner fender. It is on the cab side of the plug.
its a 92, I was thinking the link went bad. been trying to find my volt meter. I have worked on lots of cars, trucks, etc. so I know this has to be a simple electrical issue. something is not powering up. I was thinking about that damn fusable link last night as I was jumping the solenoid. any one know why they have two wires attatched to it? the last one i replaced only had one wire, this one has two and it looks 100% factory. all nicely sealed up...going to be fun having to join two wires to one fusable link...lol
This happened to my 86... never did figure it out, but there is a heavy gauge yellow wire that provides power for the entire truck interior. I suspect it had a bad connection.
Look around for the connector between the body and chassis and wiggle it, see if that helps. Also check the fusible links. If the insulation is bubbled up its probably blown...
Well it was a combination of two issues. One, my neutral switch lost connection, and the other...well oddly enough, some how it is totally empty. Not sure how that happened as it ran just the other day. filter was bone dry. Now have been trying to get the damn pump to prime. I'm use to the semi pumps that have a primer lever. not seeing one on this pump. any help would be awsome. I know I can continue to keep cranking on the motor but I dont want to have to replace that starter.
If your filter is bone dry, something aint right because it was running the other day, check to make sure that IP is still in working condition. Also pre-fill your filter with diesel, or now might be a good time to throw a can of diesel kleen through her to clean up the IP and whatnot, just my suggestion.
Im thinking the other day it ran off of what was left in the filter. She would light off for a second or two then die. Did that three times. But I'd have to crank the hell out of it. I dont want to have to keep doing that. I know the starters are tough but I also know they are tough on the wallet. I'll have to get more diesel and fill the filter. This is where I always like the gas motors...lol I know its a pain the *** to get a diesel to prime once they run out of gas.
