transfer case tail piece lube

I know this might be a stupid question but here goes anyway. I just changed the speedo drive gear in my "91" F-150 4x4 Borg Warner transfer case.When I pulled the tail cover off, it was dry inside, Here is my question, should there be fluid in the tail piece where the speedo drive gear is located?
Thought I would ask it here rather than ask the so called experts at the dealerships.

I can't say for sure. But when I pull my driveshaft out some ATF will leak from the end of the transfer case, so I would think you would have some fluid in there. Is the T-case full?

Thanks for replying. I'm not sure if the case is full, no dipstick. Tranny is full.

Pull the filler/level bung. Fluid should be up to the edge of the bung hole (truck sitting level).

Thanks, Lazy K, I found info that says it should hold about 2 quarts of fluid. Will give it a try.
