For those that have done it, is it necessary to use stainless steel tubing? Having trouble finding it locally.
Have you looked for some hard brake line? Comes in different lengths and diameters and is SS. That is what I used to extend the fuel return line. Plain steel tubing will work but do not use anything galvanized.
I really doubt you'd have to have ss tubing, I was lucky & got a piece at work but look at the line going into the fuel filt housing I don't think it's ss.
Plus the piece you put in the tank will be covered with fuel 99% of the time.
I tend to think it's not entirely necessary. But since I run B100 most of the time, I opted to use stainless tubing since biodiesel can react with mild steel, albeit to a small degree. I wanted to eliminate that altogether.
You can order tubing online from places like McMaster-Carr or Grainger in short lengths. The best bet is local hydraulic shops though. The will often give short pieces away.
I found stainless at a local hose-making store. I did not want to use coated brake line as I feared the coating would flake off over time. The stainless I got was expensive and hard to fit the brass ferrules over. This is why (if I were you), I'd just order a kit from someone who sells them. I wish you could buy uncoated steel brake line, but it doesn't seem to exist.
