Start with gears. If you have 3.55's for example, wap them for 4.10's or higher. This will give you some Uuumph... Exhaust is a good place to start after the gears. From there, go tot he intyake system (i.e. intake manifold, heads, etc).

Just the swap of gears would make a big difference.

If you only are running 31" tires tires will probably be a big waste of money. 2 wheel drive trucks are one thing, but to swap a 4x4 truck you are looking at in excess of 1000 do to it right, and all you will gain is low end acceleration and better feel in OD on the highway. A 302 4x4 truck will never be anywere near fast unless you dumb thousands into it but there is some mods you can do that will make a difference. Try and get air flowing through your engine. That means get a nice setup for your exhause and maybe a set of headers. Since you have mass air, you can use a regular cone filter instead of the stock restrictive box to save a little money. MSD ignition systems bring mixed results but most seem to think they help out. Underdrive pullies or electric fans can help, but sometimes produce charging problems, and sometimes they dont. Now, if your looking for something a little more wild, go with a set of heads and maybe a cam change if you have a lower mileage engine. This of course, is not the average do-it-yourselfer kind of work.

i am gonna just dump my 2 cents in here how is your mileage? it sounds like you might have something wrong how doggy is it? it could be the cat. converter blocked up. i know 150's with 302s are not the fastest things on the road but i never thought mine or my dads "doggy" i have a 93 speed density 302 with slight mods now. and my dad has a bone stock 94 with mass air. he was complaining a little while ago of his truck being doggy and it turned out the cat was melted down restricting the exhaust.

As strange as it may sound you may want to check to see if the PSOM is set to the correct value for your 31" tires. I have heard that some people noticed a difference once the PSOM was set correctly. There is a good tech article about it on this site.

Hope this helps.

gamehunters got it on the money here. there is no real need for gears when there are plenty of cheaper mods to be had(and ones that wont mess up your speedo). k&n, a set of headers and a cat-back dual exhaust will provide a nice difference when you hit the gas pedal. and for a relatively cheap amount of cash.

of course, a 347 stroker would also give it just a little more pep..

i wouldnt go and remove the cat. if you do, you will most likely run into driveability problems due to the missing o2 sensor. removing those pesky emmisions devices is easy HP on older trucks(i dont think ive ever had a pre-88 truck with them hooked up), but the new ones rely on exhaust gasses to control the air/fuel mixture. if its not getting a reading from the o2 sensor, you will most likely end up running too rich. plus you wont be able to pass an emissions test(a big one here in NJ)..

I've got a 93, F150, 4x4 with the 351. It won't go over 85-90, it acts like it hits a wall at this speed. I thought it had a speed/rev limiter, is this common. Gas mileage is also bad. 2.5 dual exh, K&N fuel injectin filter.

I've got a 93 and it'll go faster than the speedo can show me, so I dont think there is any kind of limiter. And this is with a 302, so I think that 351 should easily push you off of the speedo scale. But I couldn't even begin to guess what the problem might be, could be many things.
good luck,

Installed a new fuel filter about 400 miles ago. the guy I got the truck from never changed it, he tried to take it off with a set of pliers, I had aheck of time getting it off. Maybe the fuel tank was gunked-up, I'll try another new filter if that doesn't work, I guess I'll have it hooked up to dionostic computer and have it cheked for stored codes, right now the check engine dose not stay on. Installed new plugs, wires, oxcygen sensor, cap and rotor all the good tune up stuff, compression is good on all the cylinders.

Thanks.
