Hello everyone I own a 2004 F150 . I recently moved from the desert and want to know if there is a product out there that can restore the black plastic rails along my bed. I have talked to a few people and decided that painting them is not an option. I live in the midwest now and want to put life back in the truck. Thanks
Being black, you do have an option or two. Mother's makes a product called "Back to Black" (Meguires probably has an eqv) I would start with that. I've had pretty good luck using back to black and then dressing it with a protectant (Mother's again, but Meg should have something too.) If that doesn't give you the results you want Bondo has a product and there is Forever Black. I've tried the Forever Black with pretty good results. I haven't tried bondo's stuff because I haven't had the need to after the Forever Black.
my bed rails and also the cowling in front of the windshield both have turned grey from the years of UV exposure - oddly the plastic base of the antenna still looks new - anyway, I tried the "Back to Black" and it didn't make a difference. I suppose I could mask everything off and try painting with a plastic style paint (Rust-O-Leum has a new product) - anyone else have any luck with a cleaner?
I agree that painting would involve a lot of prep - I was at WalMart this morning and bought a bottle of Turtle Wax Trim Restorer --it works great - especially the cowl at the base of the windshield. Hope it will last...
the heat gun trick would outlast the polish restorers, if you have a steady hand. i did it to my 04 f150 and so far it has lasted 5 months in a hot 99 degree alabama summer
search the forums in 2004-2008 f150s, $9-15 for the heat gun is well worth it and will outlast byfar
the restorers would wash off after a while and wear away fast in weather, but yes never paint that type of plastic, it will peel eventually, no matter how good of a job it was
The heat method works really well. I just bought a 2004 and the worst thing about it was those rails. It took me 15 minutes with a plumbing torch and they where back to black. If you use a torch just keep it moving and not to stay in one spot to long. I am sure this is going to last the longest out of all because it is melting the plastic so before they ash up again the plastic has to oxidize again.
