My suggestion is.... don't do it. I know there's a certain element of 4 wheel drivers out there, but personally I'd like to see them 4 wheel drive something else...like a Chebby perhaps. Keep the 56 a 2wd! It may not be a popular one, but it's Just my opinion.
I must admit even though it is not my thing I have seen a couple 56 4x4's that looked really cool! If this is what you really want I Would go for it. I have elected to beat the crap out of my suzuki for wheelin..
It probably won't be used much for 'wheelin, but think it would be cool to make it a 4x4. I know, I know, "why make it a 4x4 then?"..........Because I want to.
Obviously it's your truck so you can do what you want to it, however, may I just say;
Based upon my experience earlier in life, when you're into off roading, you want to thrash the hell outa your vehicle. Get it muddied up, scratched and buried to the axles. What's the point of having 4 whl drive if you don't abuse it?
It would be a crime to put vintage tin through that.
2wd'ers must be hard of hearing.....or seeing in this case......
"It probably won't be used much for 'wheelin, ".....
Just want a nice build that nobody else has......search for 56 ford on the web and see what you find......98% 2wd and/or a lowrider ......not everbody beats things to pieces just because it is 4x4.

Hey now 79 Posi, enough of that. We have rules on the 48-60 forum. You have to help out at least one other person here first before you are allowed to be rude to RMF or anyone else.
For the most part, 50's 4WD isn't our thing here which is probably obvious to you by now. You are right, it is a pretty rare mod. I have seen less than 20 of them on the web. Have you searched the FTE gallery PICs yet? There used to be one or two of them there?
Thats cool,
I have no hard feelings towards anybody here, just searching for some suggestions besides don't do it, Sorry if my last post came off as rude, but my previous post had already addressed the fact that I wasn't into offroading and just wanted something different, so I guess I was fighting fire with fire. I'm going to go back to enjoying this sit now ( and search for something to put in my avatar or whatever you guys are always talking about)

I guess I just don't get it. Why build a 4x4 if you don't plan to use it? Here in the North Country, you pretty much need a 4x4 just to get around in the ice and snow in the winter...hence my Jeep Cherokee. To build a 4x4 and not use it is kinda like having a bunch of extra parts on the truck that don't do anything but just go along for the ride. Also, low is in and high is out. You can't get a 4x4 very low. I think the overall value of the truck when finished would also suffer and there are fewer people who want something like that so your base of buyers is smaller. Don't kid yourself in thinking that you will never sell it. These trucks are all toys that we eventually tire of or trade off for a better one, so future value is a factor....
Ok, I tried to walk away from this, but let me try again. There is a difference between thrashing a 4x4 and "using" it. Here in Minnesota, (the real northwoods, by the way) it will also be needed and used, NOT thrashed. What I don't get, is, why build something that everybody and their brother has AND can't or don't want to uses for 6 months out of the year? If done right, a rarer vehicle would be worth more, and hence not be a bunch of extra parts. If you were to check out any other part of this site, I think you would find that high is not out. Obviously you disagree, but I don't want low and that is all that matters.
I can see building something that no one else has. Anybody associated with the old car/truck hobby is certainly into that, and I didn't say anything about trashing a 4x4. I certainly don't trash mine. It's your truck to do with as you please and I was only trying to point out the shortcomings of building something on the edge of the mainstream instead of within it.
I wish you the best of luck on your project and will be happy to offer any advise you may want in the future. BTW, the Great North Woods is located in northern New Hampshire about 5 miles from where I live...and it's real!
Before I launched into the 2nd or 3rd tirade on thrashing vintage tin I should have read your post a little more carefully - you did say you weren't going to thrash it.
We'll still talk to you if you go the 4 X 4 route.
So.... a 56 F100 into a 4x4... I had a similar idea a few years back. I had a very good 49 F1 with everything but a good frame(bent), and thought "why not put all that on a later 4x4 chassis". Measurements told me that it could work, so I bought a C.... Subur... chassis, & set about to do the transplant surgery. I had an opportunity to discuss the idea with a good friend about when I was ready to do some cutting and slashing to make it all work. He pointed out that it would certainly be possible, and given other projects he had known I had done, he was confident that it would turn out fine. The problem would be that the value of the rig would be far less than if I either restored it, or did selective upgrades on a still 2X arrangement. A decent resto might have been worth 14K in our area, but the 4x4 would only be worth a measily 3 or 4K at the most. That got my attention. Kept it as a 2X, and with some upgrades and reconditioning sold it for 9K. It was not a full-on resto by any means but did look good, and brought a lot of interest when it was up for sale, and I actually avoided losing money for once.
Food for thought anyway........
I do see your guys' point. I guess people would be more willing to buy something that didnt look like another guy's pipe dream on wheels. I would really like to keep it basic. By this, I mean as much stock as possible, so here are my first thoughts - Change as little as possible needed to make this conversion. Was hoping to just change front axle and add a divorced transfer case, Possibly keeping original engine / tranny. I don't want it to look like a monster truck, so as little lift as necessary to accomplish this. This is still a long ways off, so I am going to stop now before I talk myself into trouble again.
By the way, you may have noticed that I found an avatar. I'm still searching for a better one.
