Just acquired what I believe to be a 1970 Bronco, came with a cabin I bought at the lake, was used for pushing logs off the beach and launching boat. Has not been on the road for many years. Starts fine and runs good but shakes like a leaf when over 20mph, is rusted pretty good. My ? is what size is the I 6cyl engine and are these worth rebuilding, what to look for as expensive parts. What about replacement panels etc.
Should be a 170ci inline 6. Shaking, I would check the entire steering assembly. Have someone turn the wheel while you look for any play indicating worn out bushing etc. Also the driveline for worn U joints. Replacement panels are readily available. Engine is very durable, but I would upgrade to a 200ci engine before I rebuilt a 170. The 200 came stock in 73-74. Mustangs, Granada's, Fairmonts and a few others also used the 200ci.
Why do you want to rebuild the engine if it starts fine & runs good? I agree with the other reply, the engine shouldn't be causing the shaking. Does it smoke?
As far as parts, it depends on what it needs...front/rear end, tranny etc. rebuilds can get pricey, but aren't needed often. Parts are easy to find. Bronco vendors, ebay, classicbroncos.com has a very good classified section, but be careful on ebay. People get parts from vendors or even auto parts stores & overcharge for them, especially when shipping is added. Ebay is hit/miss for parts. Look on craigslist too. Is there anything you're looking at in particular?
Thanks for the reply's, not too worried about the engine, seems to run quite well and have lots of mechanical experience on engines. I'm more concerned about body and power train, suspect the shakeing to be u joints, will get it up on blocks when I have a chance and see how rusted the frame is and a better look at body panels to see how much work would be required.
