My new boss has a 2000 7.3 with 171k on it. It takes a good while longer than it should to start in the morning and intermittently through the day. At start up this morning I saw some white smoke. Runs great no sputtering or anything so I'm thinking ICP sensor. Any other thoughts on what it could be? Haven't checked anything yet just trying to come up with a list of possible causes.
The truck tows an enclosed trailer every day and it gets an oil change every 3000 miles.
None of those symptoms, Robin. Once it is started it runs great. Just has long crank times sometimes.
Long crank times can be a sign of a weak LPOP. A weak LPOP may not be able to keep up with the demand of the HPOP during the initial cranking. Or the HPOP res is leaking down and it takes long cranking to refill the res. Check to see if the oil pressure comes up while cranking and that the HPOP res is full after sitting for several hours.
I'm just suggesting possible problems other then an ICP trouble.
My truck had long crank times when I first got it, like 7-8 seconds and then it ran perfect once it started and no smoke. The PO said it was like that for the 2 years he had it and he thought it was normal. I checked lots of stuff like the HPOP and ICP and such and then when I was disconnecting the batteries so I could load test them, one of the positive cables fell out of the terminal - the lock screw was stripped. I put in a new lock screw and cleaned the cable and truck starts now in 1-2 sec.
I recently solved my long cranking issue that has plagued me for 2 years...a new starter.
I had some bad batteries a couple of years back and the truck took longer than usual to crank. I lived with it for some time and was not able to find the problem until the batteries finally died (the voltage was good, but the dead cells starved the starter). With new batteries, the truck started better, but was still longer than what I would consider normal. I picked up a new starter from DB Electrical (some love 'em some hate 'em) and replaced my original starter at 200K and now it starts quicker than it ever did.
I changed the GPR yesterday glow plugs are going to get changed in the slow season.
Cool, hopefully that fixes the issue.
Last summer my truck had a hard time starting while camping in the forest. Wasn't very cold either 80's during the day and maybe high 50's at night. I replaced my glow plugs during the fall and it corrected the issue. I was out camping last week and my truck started up nice every time. I made sure to let the plugs heat up for 30 seconds or so before cranking.
Starts better now but still not as good as I'd like it to. I'd like to change glowplugs and LPOP but I don't think the boss wants to dump money into this truck right now. Likely gonna be just GPs.
The LPOP only runs around 75.00for a melling high volume and only involves pulling lhe balancer, it's a good idea for engine longevity at that mileage IMHO
