Well i just did my oil and filter, i was going to do the fuel filter to but i did not realy want to spend the money so when i was doing my oil i took out the filter to check it and it was realy dirty, when i looked into my fuel bowl it had dirt in the fuel, I know this could mess up my injectors if i dont get a new filter in there soon but can this cause my truck to smoke black smoke??
Dirty fuel and dirty oil will can hurt injectors very quickly. There are alot of tight toleranes in the injectors that even the smallest piece of dirt can cause galling on the parts ruining your injectors. Id get the filter changed ASAP. Right now flip the yellow drain lever on the side of the fuel bowl to drain it and flush the dirt out of it with fresh diesel. Then close the drain fill the bowl up 1/4-1/2 way with diesel and put your filter back in.
IIRC it is normal to have the sediment in the bowl... at least a small amount right? when I changed mine I was able to scrape the bottom of the bowl with a screwdriver and scoop out the sediment. The PO didn't care for the truck very well...
This is recent enough of a thread..and related topic.
I too have some crap in the fuel bowl. I kind of want to clean it up real good. Would it be okay to scrap down the inside of the bowl with a wirebrush or maybe something a little softer than that? I dont plan on taking it off to do this.. but I will soak up everything in there and scoop anything that comes off out before I fill it up to start it again. I obviously dont want anything I knocking off to go through my injectors :O
I think it would be ok to use a soft brush, just watch it sometimes that cast aluminim can be brittle. Just make sure you flush it out very well before installing the new filter. If you can cover the center inlet port it would be a little better to keep stuff from falling into that tube. Others on here may have a better way of cleaning it up.

Was just dirty or black? Because if it is black, could be the injector o-rings or less probably algae.
If you decide to clean very well the bottom of the cannister and you are going to remove the stand pipe (plastic center part), remember that it is LEFT HANDED THREADS.
It's really not that hard to pull out, I'd suggest if you want to start knocking crap loose in there, to have it off to make sure it all gets cleaned out. The 10-15 minutes it will take you to get off is better than sending some crap into the injectors. And, yeah, left handed threads on the stand pipe like Jose said.
The drain hose connects to a piece of steel tubing that runs down the front of the motor. Get under there and push a foot long piece of fuel line onto the bottom end of that tubing. Then you can put a bucket under it and contain the mess. Loosen up and extract what you can from the top, then flush the rest down the drain till it's clean. Unplug the heater and get the plate out of the way to get good access to the bottom. When I got mine it was so full of silt that opening the drain did nothing, the whole bottom of the canister was packed with crap. An old toothbrush works good to stir things up and loosen the crud.
