Want to put electric fan on 77 f150

Hey all, I want to put an electric fan on my truck to replace the stock straight blade clutchless fan I have right now. The only trouble is, it seems like everyone is saying that I have to upgrade my alternator for all the common swaps. I used to have a flex-a-lite black magic fan on my old 76 f150 with stock alternator and it was just fine. It was a single 17 inch fan that I believe moved about 3,000 cfm. Are there any fans like this on other vehicles that I could get fairly cheap?

the early 90's taurus fans seem to be fairly popular around here. I have a 77 too and also want to do this conversion but want to do the 3G swap first.

how much does the 3g swap cost and what is involved? I wanted to keep the stock alt, but maybe I wont be able to.

oh ok! I wonder if a guy can just bolt your stock pulley onto this alt? Since the taurus is probably serpentine I'm thinking

If your original fan still works (clutch, etc.) what about just an "extra" auxiliary fan with a thermostat? I put one on Burt and it really helped. It just a direct wire fan with a thermostat switch. It's been a few years but I believe I purchased mine from JC Whitney.

ive read theads here of guys doin the 3G swap for as cheap as $25. You would have to hit up your local junk yards. Search for the thread titled "just did a 3g upgrade" there is some great info and a diagram of how to wire up the alt. You will need the taurus alt. Harness and a maxi fuse. 180 amp i think and u can just swap the pulley for your v-belt

Dakonthemountain, I am not having any cooling problems at all, I just don't think the straight blade non-clutch fan that I have is the most efficient thing in the world. I want to go electric for efficiency. Thanks 77ford, I will check into this upgrade. Sounds like it wouldn't be too expensive. A new flex-a-lite fan is definitely out of my pricerange though. I am 24, a new dad, sole breadwinner, and making a mortgage payment on $2K a month. So needless to say money doesn't grow on trees around here!! Lol!

You can pretty much, some of us had to grind down the center of the pulley to get the bolt to go on far enough. I can get a pic of what I'm talking about since I'm not using that pulley anymore. I upgraded all my accessories to use a serpetine belt from a 90 F150.

These are both great upgrades. I have done the 3g and put a fan from a Mercury Sable (same as the Taurus).
