i plan on doing my exhaust over again from the temp job i did when my stock muffle kinda fell off. right now i have stock pipe into a cheap flowmaster super 44 then side exit in front of rear tire. With my new system i plan on keeping the down pipes stock and everything else is up for replacement. Cats are not an issue here as they dont do tail pip testing so i can get around it easily. Im looking for agressive and throaty i guess is the words. Or lack for a better term, "bad ***" sounding. I was thinking true duel or just back to stock exit. No more in front of the tire i get light headed because i have a short bed and its basically right next to the door. im open to all suggestions try to keep the cost low im not trying to spend everything i have but im willing to spend 200-300 at thhe most. OH and i guess it would help if you knew what i have for a truck. Its a 1996 f150 4.9 5speed shortbed. 2wd. Thanks guys cant wait to hear what you all have in mind.
Since its a 4.9, I would run a nice flowing single 2.5 inch exhaust with a mild sounding muffler, like a Dynomax Super Turbo. I usually don't like turn downs under the bed, but for this application it actually works pretty well, and gives a deeper sound. A loud muffler is going to sound poor for lack of a better word on the 300. You won't be able to achieve the mean V8 sound.

For a 300 I6, i would say torpedo pack (glass pack) but with out cats it would be to redneck, with out cats i would say superturbo or ultraflow
I've said it more than once, and I will say it again.....Don't waste your hard earned money on El Cheapo crap.....Get a QUALITY part...And by quality, I mean Borla.....
I have a 300 also, and as soon as I get some extra cash, I am stuffing one under my truck and will never look back....
They have a deep, throaty, aggressive sound....But it isn't brough to you in a short bark like Blowmasters, and they don't have the annoying popping and crackling of a glasspack (And yes, after a year or so of a glasspack and no cats....You'll wanna barf everytime you turn the key over...)
They are much better built than most of the conventional mufflers....And frankly, if you're gonna have to replace the el cheapo muffler every couple of years or sooner, why not get a better made product and save money in the long run?
OR
If you REALLY WANNA **** THE NEIGHBORS OFF, get a set of outlaw racing mufflers.....More or less a glasspack without the matting and spiral innards....Loud, and as raucous as hell.....But on the Inline 6....I'd recommend NOT getting them.....

The reason i buy cheap mufflers is i might change my mind after a few years, i been there done that with flow, mag, dyno, glass, and now CB. to me no more than $60 on a muffler No stainless muffler for me (Southern truck) no salt roads Bassini/magnaflow/borla sound good but to $$$$$ for me

LOL....For some odd reason, to me, Borla+Ford engines=Earsex......

I do not consider Dynomax to be el cheapo crap. As far as Tubro style mufflers go, I think they are one of the best. I will be using their Ultraflo mufflers on my truck.
I think that Borla makes good stuff, but not everyone has the cash for it. My only really problem with Borla is their ugly exhaust tips and their funky looking tail pipes on some applications.
What do you consider Magnaflow then?
By the way while it usually does sound good, Borla does not always sound all that great. I have heard several vehicles with Borla that didn't sound so good, but have also heard many that did sound good.
Different mufflers sound better on different applications.
That is definantly true TexasGuy.......If its a v8, IMO, get the Borla....And then again, as I said, I love the sound of their stuff....So, I'm getting one....And I'll post a sound clip in the Inlines section.....
Magnaflow is good stuff IMO....Just not Dynomax...I have one of their mufflers on my truck and dislike it....Too raspy and no throatyness....
I love my Borla but I recommend Magnaflow more often just because most people don't like the price of Borla. My next mufflers will most likely be Borla XR-1s or Magnaflow magnapacks.
If I had an I6 I would run a really mellow exhaust. Probably single 2.5" with a glasspack. I hear alot of I6 trucks sounding like a honda civic with a fart can driving around.
Actually a couple of LONG glass packs with dual exhaust doesn't sound bad at all. The key with running glasspacks is getting the longer ones that cost a little more. They will sound a little deeper and get rid of the cackel/crackel sound you normally think of when you hear "glasspacks." Then again you do need true duals to make sound good... I know it's overkill but the PO already had it done for me!
I'm running true duals, 26in (ish) glass packs, no cats. The exhauste runs all the way out the back and dumps down just before the rear bumper. I'll get my act together and get a sound bite on the digital camera tonight...

Which Dynomax do you have? Since you have a 300 most louder mufflers will sound a little ricey. That's the nature of the motor.
I have the stainless Dynomax Ultraflo welded series on the 65 and it sounds awesome.

A pair of long yard stick glasspacks does sound good on a V8, but not on an I6. Besides the inline doesn't move enough air to benefit from true duals.

A Dynomax VT....IMHO, the worst $85 I have ever spent.....Hence, going to try Borla....After hearing some Inlines with them, I like it...Nice smoothe, mellow sound....
