Smokeless 80e tune?

I'm a happy DP-tuner F5 customer with stock/1200/60e/80e/40/60/80t/decel tunes. I love it, but get more smoke in 80e than I'd prefer. It happens worse just off idle and at low speed downshifts like you have when climbing windy roads. Have any of you had your 80e tune adjusted for less smoke in these situations?

I think I've fixed my boost and exhaust leaks, and the turbo seems to spool quickly to 23psi or so when the situation warrants. Also, I live at 5300ft, and spend all my time at or above that altitude.

I would talk to Jody about that, Was he aware of the altitude when he programmed your chip?

There is a high altitude tune for your chip did you get it?

Also, how long have you had your tuner? My first week I would burn rubber and make an ominous cloud of black smoke behind me.. Accidentally. I got used to it now I dont smoke at all on take off if I dont want to.

Good questions, guys. Jody did know of my altitude, I think, but I was also thinking there's just one "stock" 80e tune now, no? I'm not sure if my level of smoke is abnormal, but it's more than I'd like.

For each econo tune there are 2 sets, ie 80 Econo, 80Econo High Altitude, 60 Econo, 60 Econo High Altitude.

Verify with Jody that you got the 80T High Altitude. My 80 Econo is quite capable of making smoke too, but it wont billow unless I really romp on it. Now that I am used to the tuner, under normal driving conditions I can produce no smoke or a small amount (wouldnt call it "black smoke" more of a small cloud of soot) if I am a little more heavy on the pedal if I am upset/in a really good mood/if a favorite song of mine is on.

Side note: You'd be surprised how much an upbeat favorite song can change your driving style if you start rocking out to it

Will it go past 23? It should be at or around 26-28 PSI. We have many customers around your area. Jody has done a large amount of live tuning at altitude for the past 6 years. How old are your tunes? Have you ran any datalogs? What is the oil psi looking like? We will be back in September for live tuning in Littleton, Co. if you would like Jody to look at your truck.

My guess is it could be oil pump or the Waste-gate simply needs adjusting. We have had an altitude tunes since our last trip to CO a year ago. They are for the switch back mountain empty driving.

Thanks Diane, I appreciate you chiming in. I've been looking lustily at that September live tuning session...

I've occasionally seen 25psi momentarily. I've got a turbomaster WG controller, and I think I might see higher numbers if I cranked it down a little. I get way more smoke on the way to 15psi than I do above that, though, and theoretically the WG is closed completely in that range.

Would oil pressure come into play if the "problem" is seen at low boost levels? (As I mentioned earlier, I don't know that this program is having a "problem", at all, it's just smokier than I'd like.)

I got my tunes in September. IIRC, the 80e tune was listed as correct for all altitudes. The altitude tune you mention, though, appears to address exactly the situation I'm seeing. It'll smoke pretty good in town, too, in something like an uphill right on red that causes a downshift at low boost levels.

If I can get away from work, I'll call you guys tomorrow.

Thanks,

Mark
