TIming by ear
TIming by ear
I changed out my old injector pump this weekend. I've got it timed static by lining up the factory marks. It runs decent but has an eye burning black smoke when I stomp it, no smoke at all at idle. You really can't hear it in the video but it has that psd clatter/ rattle.
Do have to say the new pump woke up the truck. I can actually break traction! I'm just weary because I have no egt and the smoke makes me uneasy.
DoYou think I need advanved or retarded?

I think it is on the cold advance. When it is revved it does not sound all that smooth to me mine does that when the cold advance is on.
Could you take another video of it once the engine is warmed up after a drive? unless of course it was warmed up already in the first vid.

what made you decide to retard a bit from the first vid (marks lined up) to the second vid (ip mark moved the drivers side?)

my timing ear is way to deaf to tell.she sure sounds like you have it in the ball park in either vid too me.
normally you need to advance 'em a tad to get a good rattle like you have.i think you probably did the right thing without having a meter.safer to have her a little retarded than too advanced.even if it is taking a slight loss of performance and economy for the time being, until you get the proper tool on her.
how does she feel when the torque converter locks up to ya?
one things for sure anyway, even if the timing is slightly retarded,it probably feels way better to ya than when she had that old tired ip in there hey?
you've got the soup bowl cut out of the lid,and running a clean filter right?

OH yea she sure has a lot more go power than before! Starts right up with a flick of the key, and starts without glow plugs! Something its never been able to be done before. Yes I did the soup bowl delete. I'm turnef up one flat also. Only v black smokes on hard accel. I just wish I coukd get the fipl adjusted where I want. Its weird not having neck breaking shifts anymore.
what am I looking for oin torque converter lockup?

nice.
well when your timing is dang near close, the lockup won't be a dreaded sluggish feeling.not even when ya start out going up hill.she'll just PULL nice and strong for ya.
what did you get for a pump? you may want to turn 'er back down a little if you dont have pyro.you won't feel any power loss at all by not rolling coal.try it,you'll see.
i just put in a IFS (International Fuel Systems) reman from U-Haul on ebay.iv got a larger than stock;3.5" free flowing exhaust and cowl induction, and the stock fuel setting i feared was too much still! she smokes a little black up hill, but only when cold.i figure its dang near perfect for my setup as is.with a stock exhaust/intake ducting, that likely would be too much.so just use cation is all im saying.you don't want to melt her down.

I dont know if its just me but it seems to be running a little warmer, as in the engine feels like it has a lot more heat coming from it.
How do I know if my shifts are not to soft?
