Hello all new here, been a ford guy my whole driving life. Had 2 mustangs, a 06 F-150 that drove forever. Got an exped. now but to my question. Know of absolute awesome shape 1 owner 2002 F-250 with the all mighty V-10. Vehicle has absolutely no rust that I can find and engine is as clean as I've ever seen. Price is good. Question time...its got 91g is this alot of mileage for this motor? I checked ever thing that I know to on the surface of the engine and aside from it being cleaned there is no rust anything that you normally see. thing was garage kept and supposedly has only been locked in a few times on bad roads and has never been off road... thanks guys...
Sounds like you know the owner from your post. Thats always a good thing. 91k miles on a V10 is nothing to be concerned about. The motor is very strong and should go much longer if well cared for. I've heard of them going to 200k+.
Maintenance is the big thing. If you know the guy and know its been well kept then 91k is nothing to scoff at.
Some of the biggest issues with the V10 are mileage (but you cant really expect it to be that great anyway, lets be honest), spark plugs shooting out (I think that was fixed by 2002) and some other things that are not specific to the V10, but rather the superduties, such as ball joints to name one.
Welcome. I bought mine at 132k miles and it now has almost 146k. Still doing great. I don't think 96k is anything to be worried about if the motor has been maintained. I've suggested it before, but I think it's good advice: Run a magnet on the dipsticks and see if you get any metal bits. That should give you a big heads up to any major internal issues.
Engines last a lot longer than they used to. With proper maintenance they can last 200 to 300,000 miles. When I was a kid people would worry when they got 50,000 miles and they traded it in. When cars cost only $1800 or so and gas was $.32, not that hard to do. Oils are far superior to oils of old and vehicles last much longer now, and now it is hard to find a new car for under $20,000. I know a dollar was worth a lot more back then...
Check the spark plugs. They got better in 02 but not fixed. Here at work we just 2 cars spit a plug on each and they are both 09's.
YOu had two 09 V10's spit plugs? If that is the case then there was something add to the issue, such as not torqed right or someone doing maint. that did not have good habits.
OP - that v10 your looking at will last you many many miles but like others have stated, check out the maint records if there are any. You can tell if a truck has been maint or abused. The 6.8 is a helluva tuff motor and will serve you well!
Seriously thanks for the great advice I did the magnet dipstick trick. All was clean and boy does this thing got some tail behind. You can feel it in the wheel when you step to the floor....
